"Arthur left a box."
Richard went still.
"What?"
"He told me to open it if Thomas ever tried to take the property."
Richard's reaction was subtle.
But Clay saw it.
"You knew about it," Clay said.
His father didn't answer immediately.
"Dad."
Richard looked at him.
"I knew Arthur was keeping records."
"Records of what?"
Richard glanced toward Danny.
"Not here."
That answer was enough to make Clay uneasy.
Police photographed the documents Thomas had brought. An officer took Megan's statement while another searched the property perimeter.
Eventually, with police present, Megan led Clay and Richard into Arthur's study.
It was a small room filled with books, framed family photographs, and an enormous wooden desk.
Megan moved toward the bookcase.
"Arthur told me third board from the wall."
One officer carefully lifted the floorboard.
Beneath it was a metal document box.
Old.
Heavy.
Locked.
Megan produced a tiny key from the chain around her neck.
Clay stared at it.
"You've had that the entire time?"
"Arthur gave it to me two days before he died."
Her hands shook as she inserted the key.
The lock clicked.
Nobody spoke.
Megan opened the lid.
Inside were dozens of documents.
Photographs.
Bank statements.
Property records.
A flash drive.
And a sealed envelope.
Across the front, in Arthur's handwriting, were four words:
FOR MEGAN — IF THOMAS RETURNS
Megan began crying before she even opened it.
Clay stepped away to give her space.
She unfolded the letter.
Her eyes moved across the first lines.
Then stopped.
"What?"
Clay asked.
Megan looked up.
Her face had gone completely white.
Richard stepped closer.
"Megan?"
She handed him the letter.
Clay watched his father's expression change as he read.
"What does it say?"
Richard lowered the page.
For several seconds, the retired attorney seemed unsure whether he should answer.
Finally he looked at Megan.
"Arthur discovered that Thomas wasn't simply trying to steal the land."
Megan stared at him.
"What do you mean?"
Richard glanced toward the box.
"He believed Thomas had been stealing from the family for years."
"How much?"
"Potentially millions."
Megan shook her head.
"Arthur never told me."
"He was trying to protect you."
"From his brother?"
Richard looked at Clay.
Then back at Megan.
"From what his brother was involved in."
Clay felt a cold sensation move through him.
"What was he involved in?"
Richard reached into the box and removed a photograph.
It showed Thomas standing beside two men in suits outside a construction office.
On the back was a date.
Three years earlier.
Richard placed it on the desk.
"The company trying to buy this property?"
Megan nodded.
Richard tapped one of the men.
"Thomas wasn't negotiating with them."
Clay understood first.
"He was working with them."
Richard nodded.
"And according to Arthur's letter, they had already promised Thomas a substantial payment if he could deliver the property."
Megan stared at the photograph.
"Arthur refused to sell."
"Exactly."
Danny appeared at the doorway.
"Mom?"
Everyone stopped.
Megan immediately folded the letter.
"It's okay, sweetheart."
Danny looked at the box.
"Is that Dad's?"
Megan nodded.
He walked toward her.
"Did he leave something for me?"
Megan's eyes filled again.
"I don't know."
Danny looked inside.
There was another envelope at the bottom.
Smaller.
His name was written across it.
DANNY
Megan covered her mouth.
Clay turned away.
Some moments didn't belong to strangers.
