Chapter I: The Stand on the Sidewalk

The afternoon sun hung low over the quiet suburban neighborhood of Oakridge, casting long golden shadows across neat lawns and cracked asphalt. On the front porch of a modest bungalow, cardboard moving boxes were stacked haphazardly beside a worn armchair draped in a blanket. A bright red eviction notice was taped to the door frame.

At the foot of the driveway stood six-year-old Lily. Wearing a faded yellow sundress and a pink baseball cap, she stood proudly behind a small folding table. Upon the table rested two plastic pitchers of cloudy lemonade, a stack of paper cups, and a Mason jar labeled with messy crayon: Lily's Lemonade — $1.

A low, guttural vibration stirred the warm summer air.

Within moments, the quiet street was filled with the rhythmic rumble of half a dozen heavy cruisers. The motorcycles glided down the street in tight formation before cutting their engines right along the curb in front of Lily’s house.

Neighbors poked their heads over wooden fences, some pulling out phones to record what they feared was a hostile confrontation. On the porch, Lily’s mother, Sarah, froze in panic, dropping a roll of packing tape before rushing down the steps.

From the lead motorcycle stepped Tank—a hulking, bearded man with tattooed arms, clad in a heavy black leather riding vest and work boots. His imposing frame towered over the little folding table.
