“David sent me the incident file from today. Eleanor has a permanent VIP annotation in the reservation system.”Marcus felt another knot form.

“What does it say?”Amelia read slowly.

**“Executive family. Preserve preferred cabin environment. Avoid unnecessary conflict.”**Marcus stared toward the rear of First Class where Eleanor now sat.

“Who added it?”“Richard’s office.”

The revelation did not make Eleanor less responsible for what she had said. It did reveal that the airline had spent years quietly confirming her belief that discomfort should be managed around her instead of asking whether her demands were reasonable.Marcus whispered, “We trained her too.”

Amelia understood immediately.“Yes.”

When the aircraft landed at LAX, nobody was waiting with cameras or security. Marcus had requested that deliberately.Leo and Maya emerged holding hands, laughing again after the captain let them peek into the cockpit.

Eleanor walked several yards behind them, phone pressed to her ear.“Richard, something happened,” Marcus heard her say.

Then she saw the people waiting beyond the jet bridge. Her footsteps stopped.

Amelia Vaughn stood beside the gate in a dark blue suit. With her were Pacific Meridian’s general counsel, board chair Evelyn Brooks, and the head of Internal Audit.Leo looked up at Marcus.

“Dad, are those your friends?”“One of them is.”

Maya pointed toward Amelia. “Is she the lady from your phone?”Marcus smiled.

“Yes.”Eleanor’s face had gone completely white.

Amelia approached Marcus, ignored every watching employee, and knelt first to the twins.“Happy birthday,” she said.

Only afterward did she stand and hug Marcus.“Welcome home, founder.”

Eleanor’s handbag slipped from her shoulder.Sarah, standing near the aircraft door, heard the word too.
