A third quietly picked up the phone.

Nobody threatened Darren.

Nobody needed to.

The room itself had changed.

Darren pointed at Lily.

“She's coming with me.”

Mason looked down at the trembling girl.

“Do you want to go with him?”

Lily shook her head violently.

“No.”

Mason nodded.

“Then she stays.”

Darren's jaw tightened.

“You have no idea what you're getting into.”

Mason looked directly into his eyes.

“I know exactly what I'm getting into.”

“No, you don't.”

Darren smiled.

“You don't even know who her mother is.”

Mason's expression changed.

“What's her mother's name?”

Darren hesitated.

Then he said:

“Rose Hart.”

Mason stopped breathing.

For twelve years, he had forced himself not to think about that name.

Rose.

The woman he had loved before he understood what love cost.

The woman who had disappeared without explanation.

The woman he had searched for until everyone told him to stop.

Mason slowly looked at Lily.

“What did you say your last name was?”

“Hart.”

He swallowed.

“Who told you about the wolf?”

“My mom.”

“Did she give you something?”

Lily reached into her pocket.

She pulled out a small silver pendant.

Mason stared at it.

He knew it.

He had bought it in Santa Fe years ago.

He had given it to Rose.

On the back was a tiny engraving.

A date.

And one word.

Always.

Mason's hands began trembling.

“Where did your mother get that?”

“She said it belonged to someone who would protect us.”

Mason looked toward Darren.

For the first time, Darren looked genuinely nervous.

Mason understood one thing immediately.

This wasn't a custody dispute.

This was something much darker.

The sheriff arrived minutes later.

Darren was forced to step away from Lily.

As soon as the officers checked his name, they discovered an outstanding warrant connected to an assault complaint filed months earlier.

Darren tried to explain.

He claimed Lily had run away.

He claimed Rose was unstable.

He claimed he was only trying to help.

But Lily kept repeating the same thing.

“He hurt Mommy.”

The sheriff asked where Rose was.

Lily gave them the name of a motel.

Mason went with the officers.

He couldn't explain why.

Maybe because of the pendant.

Maybe because of Rose.

Or maybe because some part of him had known for years that their story wasn't finished.

The motel was barely more than a row of aging rooms beside a highway.

The sheriff knocked.

“Rose Hart?”

Silence.

Then a frightened voice came from inside.

“Lily?”

Mason's heart stopped.

He knew that voice.

The door opened.

And there she was.

Rose.

Older.

Thinner.

Tired.
