Then state police.
Then two federal vehicles.
Oak Haven’s main street filled with people.
Phones appeared.
Store owners stepped outside.
Traffic stopped.
Boyd stood inside the booking room as men and women carrying government credentials entered the building.
The first through the door was a tall Black man in a charcoal suit.
He showed identification to the dispatcher.
“General Thomas Reed.”
Sarah stepped forward.
Thomas looked at her cheek.
Then her wrists.
His expression hardened.
“Sarah.”
“I’m fine.”
“That isn’t what I asked.”
“It is the answer.”
He looked toward Boyd.
“Who is Sheriff Cleary?”
Boyd finally stepped forward.
“I am.”
Thomas stared at him.
“You detained General Hayes?”
“On what basis?”
“Traffic violations escalated.”
Thomas looked at the body camera.
Then at the ceiling cameras.
“Preserve every recording.”
Boyd’s face hardened.
“You don't come into my department giving orders.”
Thomas took one step closer.
“I have no interest in commanding your department.”
He pointed toward the evidence tray.
“I am securing classified federal property.”
“She never said classified.”
Sarah finally spoke.
“You were told it was a secure government communications device.”
“That could mean anything.”
“Correct.”
“That was another reason not to throw it around.”
The booking deputy looked down.
Thomas turned toward Sarah.
“Security team is ready.”
Sarah shook her head.
“Not yet.”
“I need the local process documented before I leave.”
Thomas knew that tone.
He stopped arguing.
State Police Captain Elena Brooks entered next.
She was fifty-two, white, short gray hair, expression controlled.
Boyd exhaled.
“Captain.”
“We need to talk privately.”
“This is my building.”
“And this is now a joint incident review.”
Boyd pointed toward Sarah.
“She called federal people before making any formal complaint.”
Captain Brooks looked at him.
“She was in your custody.”
“That doesn't change—”
Something in Brooks’s voice silenced him.
Sarah watched their interaction.
History.
They knew one another.
Brooks continued.
“Turn over your body camera.”
“You serious?”
“I’m the elected sheriff.”
He blinked.
Brooks extended one hand.
“Camera.”
Boyd removed it.
Slowly.
Placed it in her palm.
Brooks looked toward the booking deputy.
“Facility recordings?”
“Automatic archive.”
“Lock access.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
Boyd said:
“This is absurd.”
Brooks turned.
“What is?”
“Everybody acting like I assaulted somebody.”
Toby appeared in the doorway.
“You did.”
Boyd’s head snapped toward him.
“You.”
Toby entered.
No badge.
“Deputy Miller?”
“Former deputy, apparently.”
Boyd pointed.
“He was fired.”
Brooks looked back at Boyd.
“Insubordination.”
Toby answered first.
“For telling him to stop hitting her.”
Thomas Reed’s expression changed.
Sarah closed her eyes briefly.
There it was.
