Trent and Greg froze, their arrogant smirks shattering instantly as they recognized the man they had mocked and assaulted in the stairwell.
Lucas did not smile. His eyes were flat, cold, and utterly merciless.
"Four million users, Brad?" Lucas asked, his voice low and vibrating with power.
Brad swallowed hard, his hands beginning to visibly shake. "I... I... Mr. Vance, there must be a misunderstanding. I didn't know... I..."
Lucas raised his hand, silencing the younger man instantly. Lucas pressed a single button on a remote control resting on the table.
The massive flat-screen monitor mounted on the boardroom wall flared to life. It displayed Brad's personal, encrypted emails. The exact emails ordering the creation of the 3.6 million ghost accounts.
"Three point six million fake accounts," Lucas read aloud, his voice echoing in the dead silence of the room. "Generated by an illegal script to defraud my investment firm of four hundred million dollars. Wire fraud. Securities fraud. And attempted embezzlement."
Brad was hyperventilating now, looking frantically between the screen and Lucas. He pointed a trembling finger at me. "It was him! David did it! He's the CFO, he engineered the numbers to inflate his stock! He's trying to frame me!"
Lucas pressed the remote again.
Audio filled the room. It was a high-fidelity recording.
"I insured myself. Here is how this plays out, David. You smile. You validate the numbers. But if you suddenly develop a conscience? I will testify that you acted alone."
It was Brad’s voice. The exact threat he had made to me in the glass office. Lucas had pulled the audio from the ambient microphone on his Omni terminal when he was hidden in the wiring closet.
Brad collapsed into the nearest chair, his face buried in his shaking hands. The bravado, the arrogance, the vicious cruelty—it was all entirely broken. He was a ruined child.
Trent and Greg were backing away toward the door, trying to distance themselves from the blast radius.
"Omni Capital officially declines the acquisition of AuraNet," Lucas stated, his voice cutting like a scalpel. "Furthermore, my legal team contacted your primary creditors at seven A.M. this morning. We presented them with the evidence of your fraud. Your lines of credit have been pulled. The FBI is waiting for you in the lobby of your building."
Brad looked up, tears of pure panic streaming down his pale face. "You're destroying my company..."
"Your company went bankrupt ten minutes ago," Lucas corrected coldly. "But Omni Capital specializes in distressed assets. I am purchasing the physical servers, the building lease, and the remaining legitimate patents."
Lucas reached under the mahogany table.
He pulled out the stained, gray maintenance uniform he had worn the day before. The coffee stain was still visible on the chest.
With a flick of his wrist, Lucas tossed the bundled uniform across the length of the long table. It slid to a halt, hitting Brad squarely in the chest and falling into his lap.
"I just bought your building for one dollar, Brad," Lucas said, leaning back in his chair. "Put it on. The third-floor toilet is clogged."
Brad sat frozen, staring down at the stained gray shirt, completely destroyed.
Lucas signaled to his security guards standing by the door. "Escort these three out. Take the back freight elevator. I don't want them bleeding on the lobby marble."
As the guards grabbed Trent and Greg by the collars and pulled a weeping Brad to his feet, the boardroom felt instantly lighter. They were dragged out of the room, the heavy oak doors shutting behind them with a satisfying finality.
I stood near the edge of the table, still trying to process the absolute surgical precision of what I had just witnessed.
Lucas stood up, walking slowly down the length of the table toward me. He stopped a few feet away, extending his hand.
I shook it. His grip was firm and grounding.
"The FBI will want to speak with you to corroborate the evidence," Lucas said, his tone softening back into the gentle rumble I remembered from the breakroom. "My legal team is already handling your immunity agreement. You won't face any charges, David. Your signature was coerced, and you helped uncover the fraud."
"Thank you," I managed to say, the overwhelming relief bringing a sudden tightness to my throat. "I don't know how I can ever repay you. My daughter... she’s safe now."
Lucas looked out the window at the morning fog rolling over the bay. "You don't owe me anything. But Omni Capital just acquired a shell of a tech company that needs to be rebuilt from the ground up. I need someone honest to run the financials. A lead auditor. Someone who doesn't look the other way when the ship starts taking on water."
He turned back to look at me. "The starting salary is double what Brad was paying you. Plus full equity. Are you interested?"
I thought of the long nights worrying about medical bills. I thought of Chloe sitting at the kitchen island, safe and provided for. And I thought of the profound, simple power of doing the right thing.
"Yes," I said, feeling a true smile break across my face for the first time in years. "I'm very interested."
"Good," Lucas said, returning my smile. "Let's get to work."
