Ward's voice hardened into a low rasp. "Sergeant, confiscate that recording. This man is making defamatory claims without basis."

"Let him speak, Doctor," Bradley said, his tone shifting. The sergeant's eyes were fixed on the silver recorder. "Go ahead, Mr. Vance."

I hit the toggle switch. The tiny speaker buzzed through the rain, playing Maren Cole’s recorded voice across the wet pavement:

"Subject is Elena Vance, current residential address 414 Cedar Lane... At thirteen-fifteen hours today, Subject entered St. Jude Pathology Annex, Sub-level 2, attempting to pull original intake tissue samples for Registry Entry 4481. When denied electronic clearance, Subject presented forged duplicate signature sheets bearing Dr. Kenneth Ward's provider PIN."

Ward stepped forward, reaching out to grab the recorder. "Turn that off!"

"Step back, sir!" Bradley barked, his arm shoving Ward back two paces. Bradley's hand rested on his duty belt. "I told you to let it play."

The recording continued, cutting through the drumming rain:

"Dr. Ward's private custodial registry operates outside state reporting guidelines. In 2022 and 2024, Elena Vance was subjected to non-disclosed gestational contracts under threat of family medical debt recovery. Ward's syndicate registers every child delivered by enrolled surrogates under hospital custodial trusts, falsifying parental abandonment forms to reroute infants to private third-party brokers for substantial cash honorariums. The 2026 cycle was flagged because Vance conceived naturally with her spouse, David Vance. Dr. Ward entered a fraudulent donor claim into the hospital registry to seize the infant upon delivery."

Ward's face drained of color under the harsh halogen glare. His umbrella tilted, rain dripping onto his coat. "That woman is mentally deranged," Ward hissed, his voice tight. "That audio is an unauthenticated rant from a fired employee."

"Then let's look at the yellow sheet," I said.

I reached into my left pocket and produced the folded yellow carbon copy, holding it open inside Bradley's flashlight beam. The bold black stamp was unmistakable: St. Jude Memorial Hospital, Maternity Ward 3B. ELENA MARGARET VANCE. Discharged to Private Custody, Third-Party Registry. November 14.

Beside the stamp was the provider PIN: KW-9041.

"Is that your PIN, Dr. Ward?" Bradley asked.

Ward didn't answer. His mouth worked silently, his fingers tightening until the handle of his umbrella creaked.

I took my car keys, stepped to the rear of the sedan, and unlocked the trunk. I lifted the carpeted floorboard, exposing the spare tire well. Resting inside the wheel rim was a heavy black iron lockbox with a combination dial and a stamped steel tag: St. Jude Reproductive Archives, Section C.

"Sergeant," I said, looking Bradley in the eye. "My wife took this box from Ward's desk today because it contains the unedited broker agreements for twenty-four women, including Elena. Ward isn't here to protect patient privacy. He came here to take this box before you found it, destroy the files, and hand our baby to the county as institutional property."

Bradley didn't hesitate. He pulled nitrile gloves from his pocket and stepped past Ward, lifting the iron box from the well.

"Sergeant, you are exceeding your jurisdiction," Ward said, his voice cracking. "I demand to speak to your division commander!"

"You'll talk to the county prosecutor, Doctor," Bradley said coldly, carrying the box directly to the hood of his patrol cruiser. He keyed his radio, his voice echoing across Cedar Lane: "Dispatch, Unit twelve. I need detectives and an assistant prosecutor from special investigations at 414 Cedar immediately. We have secured institutional evidence regarding the St. Jude burglary. Suspect Dr. Kenneth Ward is on scene. Detaining for interview."

Bradley turned back to Ward, gesturing toward the back seat of the cruiser. "Hands out of your pockets, Doctor. Have a seat."

Ward stood frozen for five long seconds in the pouring rain, looking at the squad car, then at the open lockbox on the hood, and finally at me. For the first time, the arrogant authority was gone, replaced by the hollow look of a man who realized the walls of his private empire had just collapsed.

"You have no idea what you've started, Vance," Ward whispered as Bradley took his elbow.

"I started protecting my family," I said.

Bradley shut the cruiser door on Ward, then turned to me, handing back my car keys. "Mercy General is expecting you, Mr. Vance. I've already called their security detail. No one from St. Jude gets within fifty feet of your wife's room."

I gripped the keys, the metal cold and solid in my hand, and got behind the wheel.
