Chapter 1: The Yellow Envelope

Marcus hit the porch steps without breaking his stride.

“Hey! I said what the hell do you want?” Greg spat, throwing a heavy arm across the doorway to block the entrance. The smell of stale whiskey and sour sweat radiated off him in the suffocating afternoon heat.

Marcus didn't waste words. He didn't ask for permission. Marcus simply planted his heavy leather boot on the threshold and drove his massive hands into Greg’s chest, violently shoving him backward into the dim hallway.

Greg stumbled hard, his boots sliding wildly across the hardwood floor until his spine slammed against the hallway wall, rattling the framed photos hanging there.

"Sit down!" Marcus roared, his voice bouncing off the low ceiling like a crack of thunder.

Greg gasped for air, his eyes going wide as the sheer physical reality of the man in front of him set in. Marcus stood six-foot-four, with shoulders like a bank vault, his worn leather cut displaying the Bearcat Brotherhood rocker on the back. Greg slid down the wall, his bravado entirely evaporating, his mouth opening and closing without sound.

Marcus turned away from him in absolute disgust. He took three long strides down the broken hallway toward the locked bathroom door. He could hear the desperate, muffled weeping inside.

He didn't bother testing the knob. Marcus raised his right boot and kicked the cheap wooden door squarely next to the deadbolt. The wood splintered instantly, the door flying open and banging against the tiled wall.

Inside, a woman in a gray t-shirt was curled into a tight ball on the bath mat, her arms wrapped defensively over her head. She was shaking so violently that her teeth were chattering.

Marcus immediately dropped to one knee. The dangerous, violent aura he had just used in the hallway vanished. His posture softened, making himself as small and non-threatening as a man his size possibly could.

He reached out slowly, ensuring she could see his bare, empty hands.

"Easy," Marcus said, his voice a low, steady rumble. "I gotcha. It's okay. Your boy is right outside. I'm going to take you to him."

The woman, Sarah, peeked through her arms. She looked at his heavy beard, his leather vest, and the absolute certainty in his dark eyes. Then she looked past him, into the hallway, where Greg was still cowering against the wall.

With a ragged sob, Sarah let Marcus gently grasp her shoulders. He helped her to her feet. She was unsteady, her left cheek red and swelling where she had clearly been struck earlier, but she was clutching something desperately to her chest.

It was a crumpled, thick yellow envelope. Her knuckles were stark white as she gripped it.

Marcus guided her out of the bathroom. As they passed Greg, the man on the floor suddenly snarled, a flare of desperate anger piercing through his fear.

"She's a thief!" Greg yelled, pointing a shaking finger at Sarah. "You have no idea what you're interfering with, biker! She took my property!"

Marcus didn't even look at him. He kept his broad body firmly between Sarah and the wall, escorting her out the front door and onto the sunlit lawn.

The moment Sarah crossed the threshold, Leo broke away from Marcus’s idling motorcycle and sprinted across the grass.

"Mommy!" Leo screamed.

Sarah dropped to her knees on the grass, dropping the envelope to catch her son. She squeezed him so tightly it looked like she was trying to absorb him back into her own body. She buried her face in the boy's dirty brown hair, rocking him back and forth on the lawn, openly sobbing.

Marcus stood on the grass between them and the porch. He turned around slowly.

Greg had finally stepped out of the house. He stood in the shadow of the porch awning, glaring furiously at the yellow envelope resting on the grass next to Sarah’s knees. He took one aggressive step forward, reaching behind his back toward his waistband.

Marcus stepped forward to meet him, pointing a massive, scarred finger straight at Greg’s chest.

"Try it again," Marcus said softly.
