He appeared to be in his early forties.

No uniform.

No badge that Lena could see.

No weapon in his hands.

Nothing about his appearance immediately explained why he had chosen to get involved.

He stopped several feet from them.

His posture looked calm, but his eyes did not.

Cole turned his shoulders toward him.

“This has nothing to do with you.”

The stranger remained still.

“You’re stopping her from leaving,” he said. “If she’s being detained, state the legal basis.”

For the first time that night, Cole’s confidence appeared to waver.

Only for a moment.

Then his jaw tightened.

“Back off,” he said. “Or I’ll arrest you for obstruction.”

The second officer stayed beside the cruiser.

Still watching.

Still saying nothing.

Lena glanced from Cole to the stranger.

The man in the charcoal jacket didn’t argue with him.

He didn’t raise his voice.

He didn’t even offer Cole his name.

Instead, his gaze briefly lowered toward the small body camera attached to Cole’s chest.

A tiny indicator showed that the camera was recording.

Cole noticed exactly where the man was looking.

Something shifted in his expression.

The stranger slowly angled his body slightly to the side.

His right hand slipped into the pocket of his jacket.

Cole watched him carefully.

The man pulled out a phone.

He deliberately lifted it toward his head, pressed it firmly against his ear, and waited.

For one short moment, no one spoke.

Then the stranger said,

“It’s me.”

Cole narrowed his eyes.

The man kept his gaze directed past him toward the parking lot.

“Keep recording.”

And that was the first moment Cole Harris seemed to understand that the stranger had never walked over there to debate with him.

PART 2: The Silent Witness

The heavy silence of the parking lot pressed against my chest. I had always believed a uniform meant safety, but under those harsh fluorescent lights, the only thing keeping me safe was a man I didn't even know.
