"Be good for Lily, okay?"

Emma had wrapped her arms around her mother's waist.

"Will you be home for dinner?"

"Of course."

"Promise?"

Sarah smiled.

"Pinkie promise."

They linked their little fingers.

It was a simple moment.

Neither of them knew how close they were to losing everything.

Sarah had spent the previous eighteen months rebuilding their lives after ending her relationship with Greg.

At first, Greg had seemed charming.

He brought flowers, remembered Emma's birthday, and promised Sarah that she would never have to struggle alone again.

But his kindness gradually became control.

He criticized Sarah's friends. He questioned her spending. He became furious whenever she made decisions without him.

Eventually, he began frightening Emma.

The final incident happened on a rainy Thursday evening.

Sarah had returned from work to find Emma crying in her bedroom while Greg shouted about a broken picture frame.

Emma had accidentally knocked it off a shelf.

Greg had grabbed her arm hard enough to leave bruises.

Sarah ordered him out that night.

He refused.

The police were called.

A protective order followed, and Greg was forbidden from approaching Sarah or Emma.

But he continued calling from unfamiliar numbers.

Sometimes he left messages.

Sometimes he parked across the street from Sarah's apartment.

And sometimes he simply disappeared for weeks, allowing Sarah to believe the nightmare might finally be over.

Three days before the supermarket incident, Sarah received a message.

You think you can take everything away from me? You'll learn what it feels like.

She reported it.

The authorities documented the threat, but Greg had vanished before officers could locate him.

Sarah did not tell Emma about the message.

She wanted her daughter to feel safe.

That morning at the park, Lily stepped toward a nearby bench to retrieve Emma's water bottle.

It took less than thirty seconds.

A dark pickup truck stopped beside the curb.

Greg climbed out.

"Emma!"

The little girl froze.

"Greg?"

"Your mommy sent me. There's an emergency."

Emma backed away.

"Mommy said I shouldn't go with you."

Greg glanced toward Lily, who was still searching through her bag.

"Your mommy's hurt, sweetheart. We have to hurry."

Emma's face changed.

"Mommy's hurt?"

"Yes. Come on."

When she hesitated, he grabbed her wrist and hurried her toward the truck.

Emma began screaming.

Lily turned.

"Emma!"

She dropped the water bottle and ran.

But Greg had already pushed Emma into the passenger seat.

The truck sped away.

Lily immediately called 911.

Then she called Sarah.

Sarah was halfway through preparing a customer's order at the bakery where she worked when her phone rang.

She answered with a smile.

That smile vanished within seconds.

"What do you mean she's gone?"

Her manager watched her turn white.

"Greg took her?"

The tray slipped from Sarah's hands.

Pastries scattered across the floor.

Sarah barely noticed.

"Please," she whispered into the phone. "Please tell me you saw where he went."

Lily was sobbing.

"I tried to stop him. I'm so sorry."

Sarah grabbed her coat.

Her hands shook so badly that she dropped her car keys twice.

Every terrible possibility rushed through her mind.

Greg had always said he would make her regret leaving.

Now he had taken the one person Sarah loved more than her own life.

Meanwhile, inside the pickup truck, Emma sat trembling beside him.

"Please take me to Mommy."

Greg stared at the road.

"Your mother needs to learn a lesson."

"I want to go home."

"Be quiet!"

Emma shrank against the door.

Greg stopped at a supermarket because he needed water, fuel money from an ATM, and a moment to decide where to go next.

He warned Emma not to make a scene.

But when he turned away near the store entrance to check his phone, Emma slipped from his grasp.

She ran through the automatic doors.

Past the produce section.

Past the bakery.

Past frightened strangers who did not understand why she was crying.

Then she saw a huge man wearing a leather vest.

Something about him reminded her of the grandfather she had once known.

She ran straight toward him.

And grabbed his leg.

CHAPTER 4: THE MOMENT EVERYTHING CHANGED

Back in the cereal aisle, Greg was growing desperate.

"Move!" he shouted.

He tried to reach around Marcus and seize Emma's arm.

Marcus stepped sideways, placing his broad chest directly in Greg's path.

"Don't touch her."

Greg shoved him.

The biker barely moved.

Several shoppers gasped.

Marcus had spent much of his life surrounded by men who believed intimidation was strength.

He had learned long ago that the loudest person in a confrontation was rarely the strongest.
