EPILOGUE — AFTER THE BELL
Adrian eventually retired from professional boxing.
He never regained all of his former fame, and he no longer wanted it.
The community gym became known for protecting young athletes rather than producing celebrities. Fighters received medical screenings, injured athletes could seek assistance, and children could train without worrying about money.
Marcus remained involved as long as his health allowed.
Nora managed the family-support program.
Eli continued boxing and began writing about athletes whose stories were usually ignored.
Years later, someone asked Adrian what he remembered about the night Eli entered his ring.
He did not mention the crowd or the cameras.
“I remember a child being brave enough to ask an adult to tell the truth,” he said.
At the gym, an old bell hung above the entrance.
Whenever a nervous young fighter stepped into the ring, Marcus gave the same advice:
“Your job isn't to be fearless. Your job is to choose what your fear is allowed to make you do.”
Then the bell would ring.
And another round would begin.
