My father stepped forward.

“You knew she was alive.””

The accusation was quiet.

But devastating.

Stephen looked at him.

“No.””

“You knew something.””

“Yes.””

“What?””

Stephen looked down.

“I knew she was trying to expose someone.””

“Who?””

His eyes moved to me.

“Your mother believed the person stealing from Bennett Hospitality was not Stephen.””

My uncle looked at him.

Not me.

Him.

My father.

The room went silent.

I felt sick.

“What are you saying?””

Stephen slowly reached into his coat.

Security immediately moved.

“Relax.””

He pulled out a small envelope.

“I came here because I wanted you to see this before anyone else did.””

I didn’t take it.

“What is it?””

“A copy of your mother’s final investigation.””

“Why do you have it?””

“Because she gave it to me.””

My father looked shocked.

“No.””

Stephen looked at him.

“Yes.””

“You said she never contacted you.””

“I said she never trusted you.””

The words hit harder than a shout.

My father stepped back.

I looked between them.

“Someone explain.””

Stephen placed the envelope on the table.

“Your mother discovered money was missing.””

“Yes.””

“She followed the trail.””

“Yes.””

“She found Stephen’s name.””

I looked at him.

“Your name.””

He nodded.

“But she also found something else.””

“What?””

He looked directly at my father.

“She found someone was using your father’s access codes.””

My heart stopped.

“Dad’s?””

“Yes.””

My father shook his head.

“That’s impossible.””

“Your credentials authorized every transfer.””

“But I didn’t do it.””

“I know.””

Stephen’s answer shocked everyone.

He continued.

“Someone wanted it to look like David was responsible.””

I looked at him.

“Who?””

Stephen’s face became serious.

“Your mother never discovered the person behind it.””

“Then why are you here?””

He reached for the envelope.

“Because I found out.””

The lights above us flickered.

Everyone looked up.

Then the emergency system announced:

*“Security breach detected. Executive floor lockdown initiated.””*

Charles grabbed his radio.

No response.

Again.

The doors of the hidden room began locking automatically.

Stephen looked toward the entrance.

His expression changed.

“He’s here.””

I looked at him.

“Who?””

Stephen stared at my father.

Then whispered,

“The person your mother was trying to protect you from.””

The lock clicked.

And from the other side of the hidden door, someone knocked three times.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

Then a familiar voice said:

“Maya.””

My blood turned cold.

Because I knew that voice.

It belonged to someone I trusted.

Someone who had been beside my family for years.

And someone who should never have known this room existed.

Chapter 8: The Truth My Mother Left Behind

Nobody spoke.

The words remained on the screen.

*DO NOT WATCH THIS WITH DAVID.*

My father stared at them.

I watched his face.

Searching.

Waiting.

Looking for guilt.

Looking for fear.

Looking for anything.

But all I saw was pain.

“Maya.””

His voice was quiet.

“I can explain.””

I looked at him.

“That sentence was written by Mom.””

“Yes.””

“She specifically said not to watch it with you.””

“Yes.””

“So explain.””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

That hurt more than an answer.

Daniel moved toward the laptop.

“Maybe she wanted to protect him.””

Stephen immediately turned.

“Don’t.””

Daniel ignored him.

“You don’t know that.””

“I know Margaret.””

Daniel smiled sadly.

“No. None of us did.””

The sentence made me angry.

“You’re wrong.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Your mother was brilliant.””

“Yes.””

“She kept secrets from everyone.””

“Yes.””

“Even you.””

That one hurt because it was true.

My mother had always been the person I ran to.

But apparently, there had been an entire world she kept hidden.

I sat in front of the laptop.

“I'm watching it.””

My father stepped forward.

“Maya.””

“I’m watching it.””

He stopped.

I pressed play.

The screen filled with my mother’s face.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

She sat in the same hidden room.

The camera angle was different.

This was recorded before the first video.

Her eyes looked directly into the lens.

“If you are seeing this, then something happened that I feared.””

I held my breath.

“My family has been divided.””

She paused.

“And I am sorry.””
