Charles looked confused.

“You knew this existed?””

Stephen ignored him.

“Maya, I think you’re upset.””

I almost laughed.

“Upset?””

I held up the photograph of my mother.

“She was alive after the day you told us she died.””

The smile disappeared.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

“You found your mother’s files.””

“You knew they existed.””

“I suspected.””

“Why?””

Stephen walked slowly into the room.

“Because your mother always believed secrets were safer when hidden inside places nobody respected.””

I stared at him.

“You’re not answering.””

“I’m trying to prevent you from making a mistake.””

“A mistake like trusting you?””

His expression hardened slightly.

“Maya.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You were my uncle. You held me at my mother’s funeral.””

His eyes softened.

“I loved your mother.””

“Then why did she hide evidence from you?””

That landed.

Stephen went quiet.

My father watched him carefully.

“You’re not here because of the room,” Dad said.

Stephen looked at him.

“No.””

“Why are you here?””

Stephen’s face changed.

For the first time, his mask slipped.

“Because someone accessed the system.””

Charles looked confused.

“What system?””

Stephen ignored him.

“You weren’t supposed to find this room yet.””

My stomach dropped.

“Yet?””

Stephen looked at me.

“Yes.””

“Who was supposed to find it?””

Silence.

Then he answered.

“You.””

I stared.

“What?””

“Your mother arranged this.””

I looked at the laptop.

The key.

The hidden room.

The recordings.

“She knew I would find it?””

“Yes.””

“After she died?””

Stephen’s expression shifted.

“She hoped.””

My father stepped forward.

“You knew she was alive.””

The accusation was quiet.

But devastating.

Stephen looked at him.

“No.””

“You knew something.””

“Yes.””

“What?””

Stephen looked down.

“I knew she was trying to expose someone.””

“Who?””

His eyes moved to me.

“Your mother believed the person stealing from Bennett Hospitality was not Stephen.””

My uncle looked at him.

Not me.

Him.

My father.

The room went silent.

I felt sick.

“What are you saying?””

Stephen slowly reached into his coat.

Security immediately moved.

“Relax.””

He pulled out a small envelope.

“I came here because I wanted you to see this before anyone else did.””

I didn’t take it.

“What is it?””

“A copy of your mother’s final investigation.””

“Why do you have it?””

“Because she gave it to me.””

My father looked shocked.

“No.””

Stephen looked at him.

“Yes.””

“You said she never contacted you.””

“I said she never trusted you.””

The words hit harder than a shout.

My father stepped back.

I looked between them.

“Someone explain.””

Stephen placed the envelope on the table.

“Your mother discovered money was missing.””

“Yes.””

“She followed the trail.””

“Yes.””

“She found Stephen’s name.””

I looked at him.

“Your name.””

He nodded.

“But she also found something else.””

“What?””

He looked directly at my father.

“She found someone was using your father’s access codes.””

My heart stopped.

“Dad’s?””

“Yes.””

My father shook his head.

“That’s impossible.””

“Your credentials authorized every transfer.””

“But I didn’t do it.””

“I know.””

Stephen’s answer shocked everyone.

He continued.

“Someone wanted it to look like David was responsible.””

I looked at him.

“Who?””

Stephen’s face became serious.

“Your mother never discovered the person behind it.””

“Then why are you here?””

He reached for the envelope.

“Because I found out.””

The lights above us flickered.

Everyone looked up.

Then the emergency system announced:

*“Security breach detected. Executive floor lockdown initiated.””*

Charles grabbed his radio.

No response.

Again.

The doors of the hidden room began locking automatically.

Stephen looked toward the entrance.

His expression changed.

“He’s here.””

I looked at him.

“Who?””

Stephen stared at my father.

Then whispered,

“The person your mother was trying to protect you from.””

The lock clicked.

And from the other side of the hidden door, someone knocked three times.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

Then a familiar voice said:

“Maya.””

My blood turned cold.

Because I knew that voice.

It belonged to someone I trusted.
