She raised the heavy metal wand, pointing the nozzle directly at my back.
CHAPTER 4
Time seemed to fracture, slowing down to an agonizing crawl.
I was kneeling on the cold, wet concrete, my hand clutching the broken piece of pink chalk. The deafening vibration of the industrial gas engine rattled through the soles of my shoes. I looked up, twisting my neck, and saw the absolute malice burning in Nancy’s eyes.
She didn't just want me gone. She wanted to hurt me. She wanted to physically punish me for daring to challenge her authority.
"Drawing on the pavement destroys our property values!" Nancy yelled, her voice easily cutting through the morning air.
"Nancy, no!" Brenda shrieked from the sidewalk, suddenly realizing how far this had gone. "She’s pregnant!"
Nancy ignored her. She planted her feet wide, gripping the handle tightly.
And she squeezed the trigger.
The sound was like a localized explosion. A furious, hyper-concentrated beam of pressurized water, operating at thousands of pounds of pressure, erupted from the metal nozzle.
It struck me squarely between the shoulder blades, right at the base of my neck.
The sheer physical force was incomprehensible. It didn’t feel like water; it felt like being hit in the spine by a speeding car. The impact instantly blew the breath from my lungs. My vision flashed blinding white.
The pressure physically lifted my kneeling body off the ground, violently shoving me forward across the flooded driveway.
I couldn't scream. I couldn't breathe. I threw my arms out in a desperate, primal reflex to protect my unborn child, twisting my body just before I struck the house.
My upper back and shoulder slammed brutally against the corrugated metal of the garage door. The heavy bang echoed across the entire neighborhood, ringing out louder than the motor.
I collapsed onto the soaked concrete in a heap. The freezing water completely soaked my maternity sweater and leggings. My entire back felt like it was on fire, the skin stripped and burning from the horrific friction of the blast. I curled into a tight ball, wrapping both of my arms around my massive, pregnant stomach, gasping frantically for air that refused to enter my lungs.
A searing, agonizing contraction ripped through my abdomen—harder, faster, and more terrifying than anything before it.
I let out a raw, broken scream, terrified that the impact had harmed the baby.
"Learn not to litter, bitch!" Nancy sneered, the power wand still raised in her hands, her face twisted in an ugly, self-righteous smirk.
She never even saw the door open.
The heavy oak front door of the safe house didn't just swing—it exploded outward on its hinges.
Agent Miller burst onto the porch like a force of nature. His dark suit jacket flew back as he cleared the brick steps in two massive, terrifying strides. He wasn't the calm, restrained protection officer anymore. He was a federal agent witnessing an attempted murder.
He moved with blinding tactical speed, planting himself directly between me and Nancy. His service weapon was drawn, locked in a flawless two-handed grip, the barrel leveled squarely at the dead center of Nancy’s chest.
A second later, Agent Hayes flanked him, his own weapon drawn and aimed directly at Carl’s head.
The sheer, terrifying reality of two heavily armed men materialized in a quiet suburban driveway sent shockwaves across the street. The neighbors watching from their porches froze in absolute horror.
Nancy’s smirk vanished, instantly replaced by pale, wide-eyed terror.
"Drop the equipment and step away from her, right now!" Agent Miller roared, his voice echoing with absolute, uncompromising authority.
Nancy gasped, her hands shaking violently. She opened her fingers, letting the heavy metal wand clatter loudly against the concrete. The pressurized water sputtered and died, leaving only the dull hum of the engine. She threw her hands in the air, stumbling backward, her pristine white shoes splashing in the puddles.
"I—I was just cleaning the driveway!" Nancy stammered, her voice pitching up into a hysterical whine. "She wouldn't leave! They are running an illegal business! Who are you?!"
