Before I could lift it, Martha lunged forward with shocking speed. Her manicured hand clamped down on the opposite side of the cardboard package.

"Let go of it!" she hissed, yanking the box toward her.

The sudden jolt threw my center of gravity completely off. Because my hands were wrapped around the underside of the package, her pull dragged me forward. I stumbled, my sandals scraping against the wooden deck. Panic flared in my chest. If I fell forward, I would land directly on my stomach.

"Martha, stop!" I screamed, desperately pulling the box backward to stabilize myself. I leaned my heavy frame into the resistance, terrified of falling.

For a split second, we were locked in a bizarre, pathetic tug-of-war. Me, desperate to keep my balance. Her, practically foaming at the mouth with unhinged authority. Helen and Beatrice watched from the sidewalk, not making a single move to intervene, their silence enabling the madness.

“It is trash!” Martha shrieked.

Realizing I wasn't going to let go, Martha’s eyes darkened with sheer, malicious rage. Without a moment's hesitation, she lifted her right arm. The silver golf club caught the bright afternoon sun as it arced through the air.

I didn't even have time to raise my hands.

The heavy metal shaft came down with brutal, swinging force, colliding squarely with my upper right arm. The sharp crack of metal against bone echoed loudly across the quiet suburban street.

The pain was instantaneous and blinding. It felt like a hot iron rod had been driven straight through my muscle. A sharp, tearing sensation followed as the edge of the club’s grip tore through the thin fabric of my sundress, ripping a deep gash into my skin.

I let out a breathless, agonizing shriek, my fingers instantly releasing the box. My knees buckled beneath the sudden wave of shock. I collapsed sideways onto the wooden decking, landing hard on my hip and shoulder, my left arm instinctively wrapping tightly around my swollen belly to protect my baby from the impact.

Blood immediately began to well up from the tear in my bicep, hot and sticky, dripping rapidly down my arm and splattering onto the pristine white trim of the porch. My ears were ringing. The world tilted, spinning out of focus.

Through the haze of pain, I looked up.

Martha stood over me, not a single ounce of regret on her face. She easily scooped up the dropped cardboard box, tucking it under her left arm. She didn't look at my bleeding arm. She didn't ask if the baby was okay.

Instead, she turned her back, walking triumphantly down the porch steps. Helen and Beatrice fell into step beside her, falling into their usual flank formation as they marched down the sidewalk.

"I'm disposing of this hazard myself!" Martha called over her shoulder.

I lay there, clutching my bleeding arm, gasping for air. I watched in absolute horror as Martha marched straight to the end of our street, where the large, industrial neighborhood trash compactor sat behind a brick enclosure. It was meant for crushing large tree limbs and community waste.

Martha casually tossed my package into the deep metal chute. With a vicious, satisfied smirk aimed back in my direction, she slammed her palm against the green activation button.

The massive gears engaged with a deafening, grinding roar.

I pressed my face against the hot wood of my porch, sobbing as the machine violently crushed the box, tearing apart the corrugated cardboard and whatever was inside it. I was bleeding, terrified, and utterly broken. The tyrant had finally won.
