Chapter 1: The Defiance at North Mountain
The humid air inside the North Mountain Dojo felt suffocatingly heavy. Dust motes floated quietly under the beam lights, but the ground was alive with nervous energy. Over a hundred students, dressed in pristine white gis, sat in an outer circle, holding up their smartphones to livestream the unsanctioned challenge.
In the center stood Kenji—a 24-year-old underground fighting sensation and former top student of the school. His bare chest, wet with sweat, heaved violently. Dressed in unbuttoned karate attire with his black belt tied low, he pointed the tip of a thick wooden bokken sword inches from the chest of Master Sato, the 70-year-old grandmaster who stood motionless in a dark charcoal kimono.
"One strike, old master! Block it and I walk away!" Kenji roared, his raspy voice echoing off the high wooden rafters. "When this lands, you yield the school, the name, and the title to me!"
Behind Master Sato, the senior instructor crossed his arms tight, his jaw clenched in suppressed fury as the crowd of onlookers cheered. Yet Master Sato’s expression did not flicker. Without uttering a word, the old man slowly raised his simple bamboo staff into a high guard, locking his unblinking eyes onto the challenger.
