CHAPTER 3: The Wing He Claimed Was Cleared
I slammed the heavy steel drawer of my workbench shut, locking the telemetry drive deep into my canvas tool vest before Marcus could touch it. Marcus stepped across the threshold, his heavy flashlight striking the steel edge of my desk as Julian Mercer appeared at the entrance of the wire cage. If I let them corner me inside the sub-basement enclosure, Julian would confiscate the digital drive and padlock the mechanical exit from the outside.
"Stand down, Marcus," Julian said, his voice flat, leisurely, and completely self-assured. He walked into the shop with his tailored coat unbuttoned, stepping over the concrete floor with the cold confidence of an executive inspecting private property. "Arthur is a sensible man. He spent thirty years maintaining municipal pipes, and he understands the difference between a comfortable retirement in the valley and facing criminal sabotage charges in county court."
"You locked four vulnerable residents into Ward C to hide them from the state licensing board, Julian," I said, keeping my boots firmly planted on the floor.
Julian smiled, a faint, patronizing twitch of his thin lips. "Ward C was decommissioned forty-eight hours ago under state protocol forty-two. Four individuals were scheduled for transfer to St. Jude’s. When St. Jude’s experienced an acute bed shortage, administration initiated a standard emergency shelter-in-place protocol pending secondary placement. It is entirely within my statutory discretion as chief administrator. You found a technical telemetry glitch, Arthur. You are an aging mechanic who does not understand administrative billing codes."
He extended his right hand, palm upturned, fingers curved in a calm, dismissive gesture.
"Give Marcus the flash drive, Arthur. Hand over your brass key ring. In twenty minutes, the county licensing auditors will arrive at the front entrance. They will inspect our administrative files, verify the empty wing, and approve the deed transfer to the holding trust. Your pension will be funded in full by three o'clock. If you force Marcus to intervene, you leave here under formal detention, and I personally report that an erratic ex-employee tampered with emergency hospital valves."
Julian was entirely confident because he believed every lever of institutional authority belonged to him. He had the corporate letterhead, legal counsel, signed board resolutions, and the polished diction of an executive on municipal boards. To the inspectors arriving at noon, I was merely an aging maintenance worker with grease permanently ground into my palms.
He did not realize that four decades in mechanical plants teaches a man exactly how much pressure an iron vessel can withstand before it ruptures.
My right hand was already resting behind my hip on the yellow bypass valve of Boiler Three.
"You are right about one thing, Julian," I said. "I am a plant mechanic."
I threw my weight downward on the iron lever.
The auxiliary blowdown valve tripped with an ear-splitting crack. Ninety pounds of saturated steam blasted through the diffuser nozzle into the concrete aisle. A roaring wall of scalding white vapor filled the aisle, blinding the fixtures and deafening the enclosure with boiling mist. Marcus stumbled backward, throwing his forearm across his eyes as the cloud rolled across the mesh partition. Julian coughed sharply, shielding his face with both hands, shouting for Marcus as the floor vanished into white fog.
I dropped low to the floor where the air remained clear, squeezing through the eighteen-inch gap between Boiler Three's brick housing and the limestone wall. It was an unmapped maintenance crawlway built during the plant installation, leading directly into the east pipe chase beneath the hospital foundation. I clipped my small inspection light to my vest, pulled my protective goggles down, and crawled through the iron access hatch into the darkness.
