It was her father's will.
But not the version she remembered.
One paragraph had been highlighted.
Ownership of Whitmore Holdings shall pass equally to my surviving daughters, Eleanor Whitmore and Margaret Whitmore.
Eleanor stared.
“My father said you were dead.”
“He needed you to believe that.”
“Why?”
Margaret looked directly into the camera.
“Because I discovered what the Whitmore fortune was actually built on.”
The Archive became silent.
Eleanor whispered:
“What?”
Margaret smiled again.
“Children.”
Chloe recoiled.
Mark looked sick.
Richard forced himself upright.
“Margaret, stop.”
“No.”
She leaned toward the camera.
“It's time they know everything.”
Then an alarm sounded.
Not the old Archive alarm.
A different one.
Anna looked at the control panel.
Her face changed.
“That's the purge system.”
Mark frowned.
“What does it purge?”
Richard answered.
“Evidence.”
A countdown appeared on every screen.
05:00
04:59
04:58
Eleanor looked around.
“How?”
Richard pointed toward the far wall.
“Emergency exit.”
Anna ran toward it.
Locked.
“Override?”
“Requires two biometric signatures.”
“Whose?”
Richard looked at Eleanor.
“Mine.”
Then he looked toward Chloe.
“And hers.”
Chloe stepped backward.
“Why me?”
Richard stared at her.
“Because you're not Claire.”
Everyone froze.
Chloe's lips trembled.
“What?”
Richard's face filled with regret.
“Claire died twenty-seven years ago.”
Anna whispered, “Richard...”
He looked directly at Chloe.
“You're the other twin.”
Eleanor felt the room tilt.
“The missing girl?”
Richard nodded.
Chloe stared at him.
“Then who am I?”
Richard answered.
“Your real name is Charlotte.”
The countdown continued.
03:41
03:40
03:39
Mark stepped toward Chloe.
But Eleanor was watching Margaret's screen.
Margaret wasn't surprised.
She was smiling.
And Eleanor finally understood.
“You wanted us here.”
Margaret's smile widened.
“Yes.”
“This isn't a purge.”
Richard looked toward the countdown.
Then toward Margaret.
His expression changed.
“Oh God.”
Eleanor whispered:
“What?”
Richard stared at the locked Archive door.
“The countdown isn't destroying this room.”
“Then what is it doing?”
Richard looked at Eleanor.
“Uploading it.”
Mark stared at the thousands of files.
“To where?”
Margaret answered through every speaker simultaneously.
“Everywhere.”
The countdown reached sixty seconds.
Richard shouted:
“If the Archive goes public, governments will fall.”
Margaret smiled.
“That's the idea.”
00:30
Eleanor stepped toward the camera.
“What do you want?”
“For once?”
Margaret's expression became almost peaceful.
“The truth.”
00:15
00:14
Richard suddenly looked at Chloe.
Then at Eleanor.
“There's something else.”
“What?”
“The Archive contains one file Margaret can never allow you to see.”
Margaret's smile vanished.
“Richard.”
Eleanor looked at him.
“What file?”
Richard pointed toward a locked black cabinet at the back of the room.
On its door was a single label.
ELEANOR WHITMORE — ORIGINAL IDENTITY
Eleanor stared at it.
Margaret shouted through the speakers.
“DON'T OPEN THAT CABINET!”
The countdown reached—
00:03
00:02
00:01
The screens went black.
And in the darkness, Richard whispered the words that made Eleanor forget everything else.
