Dean reached for the phone at his station, and within a couple of minutes, a uniformed security guard approached the counter — a broad-shouldered man named Marcus Delaney who had worked at the branch for nearly a decade, considerably longer than Dean's own tenure, and who arrived at the scene with the particular measured caution of someone accustomed to de-escalating rather than escalating whatever situation he found.

"What's going on here?" Marcus asked, glancing between Dean and the elderly man standing calmly at the counter, cane in one hand, leather folder still resting on the surface in front of him.

"This gentleman doesn't have an account here, and he won't leave the counter," Dean said. "I need him escorted out."

Marcus's eyes moved to Edward, taking him in fully — the coat, the cane, the calm, unbothered composure of a man who did not, in Marcus's decade of experience reading the body language of customers on the verge of genuine confrontation, look anything like someone about to cause trouble.

"Sir," Marcus said, addressing Edward directly, his tone considerably gentler than Dean's had been, "is there something I can help clarify here?"

"I have an account here," Edward said, calmly, to Marcus. "I've been trying to ask a simple question about a transaction, and I haven't been able to get anyone to actually check."

Marcus glanced toward Dean, a faint, uncertain frown crossing his face, before turning back to Edward. "I understand, sir. But if there's some confusion about the account, I think it might be simpler if we—"

Edward didn't argue. He didn't raise his voice, didn't insist further, didn't do any of the things a lesser version of this moment might have called for. He simply reached out, gently, and pointed toward the computer terminal on Dean's side of the counter.

"Before you remove me," he said, his voice carrying an unmistakable, quiet authority now, "check that screen. Type in the name on the statement I gave you."

There was something in his tone — not a threat, nothing close to one, but a particular steadiness that made both Dean and Marcus pause, the specific weight of a man who spoke as though he already knew, with total certainty, exactly what the screen was about to reveal.
