“It looks like my signature, sir,” I whispered, my voice breaking. “But I swear to you, I have never seen this document in my life.”

Victoria let out a heavy, patronizing sigh.

“She is obviously lying to protect herself, Mr. Pendelton,” Victoria said quickly. “The proof is right there in black and white.”

Julian looked from the paper to Victoria, and then to the maroon briefcase resting near her feet.

“Corporate fraud is a very serious accusation, Ms. Vance,” Julian said calmly.

“Before I involve the police, I want my legal team to verify the authenticity of this physical document in our secure lab.”

Victoria’s confident mask slipped for just a fraction of a second, revealing a flash of genuine panic.

“That hardly seems necessary, sir,” she said quickly. “The evidence is clear.”

“I insist,” Julian replied, standing up from his chair.

“We will take a fifteen-minute recess. You and Ms. Evans will remain in this room.”

Julian handed the signed paper to his lead attorney, and without another word, the three men walked out of the boardroom, leaving the heavy oak doors to click shut behind them.

The moment the latch locked, the atmosphere in the room completely changed.

Victoria dropped the act of the heartbroken mentor and turned to me, her eyes burning with a cold, predatory hatred.

“You are going to take the fall for this, Claire,” Victoria whispered, stepping toward me.

“Or I swear to God, I will destroy your entire life.”

The vast, luxurious boardroom suddenly felt as small and suffocating as a prison cell.

Victoria stood only inches away from me, the heavy scent of her expensive sandalwood perfume mixing with the bitter smell of her nervous sweat.

“What did you do, Victoria?” I whispered, backing away from her until my shoulders hit the cold glass of the floor-to-ceiling window.

“What did you do to those financial models?”

Victoria let out a sharp, cruel laugh, pacing back and forth across the expensive carpet.

“I did what was necessary to survive, Claire,” she hissed, her voice dripping with venom.

“Over the last two years, I borrowed twelve million dollars from our firm’s client holding accounts to cover my own bad investments.”

My stomach plummeted, and the sheer scale of her crime hit me like a physical blow.

She hadn’t just altered a spreadsheet; she had been actively embezzling millions of dollars from our own company.

“The auditors at our firm are scheduled to review my division next month,” Victoria continued, her eyes wide with frantic energy.

“I needed this merger to close today so I could use Pendelton’s undervalued Dallas assets to secretly replace the money I took.”

She stopped pacing and pointed a perfectly manicured finger directly at my chest.

“It was a flawless plan, until that arrogant old man decided to run his own private audit.”

I shook my head, tears of absolute panic finally spilling hot down my cheeks.

“You used my name,” I cried, my voice cracking. “You used my login to access the files, and you forged my signature to authorize the theft.”

Victoria smiled, a cold, empty expression that didn’t reach her eyes.

“I didn’t forge it, sweetheart,” she sneered. “I transferred it from a stack of blank compliance forms I made you sign months ago.”

She stepped closer, trapping me against the window, her voice dropping to a dangerous, conspiratorial whisper.

“Now, here is what is going to happen, Claire,” she said calmly.

“When Julian Pendelton comes back into this room, you are going to confess to everything.”

“I will not go to prison for you!” I shouted, pushing her shoulder away from me.

Victoria didn’t flinch. She simply reached into her pocket and pulled out her cell phone.

“If you fight me, my lawyers will tie you up in court for the next ten years,” Victoria threatened softly.

“You will be fired today, your wages will be garnished, and you will lose your house by the end of the month.”

She tapped the screen of her phone, bringing up a photograph of my husband Mark, lying in his hospital bed attached to a breathing machine.

“What happens to Mark when the specialized insurance payments stop, Claire?” she asked, her voice dripping with cruel sympathy.

“What happens when he gets transferred to a state-run facility because you tried to play the hero?”

A horrific, paralyzing cold spread through my entire body.

She had weaponized my deepest vulnerability, twisting my love for my husband into a chain around my neck.

“But if you take the fall,” Victoria continued, leaning in so close I could feel her breath on my cheek.

“It will be treated as a first-time white-collar offense. You will get probation. And I will secretly wire two million dollars into an offshore account for your family by midnight tonight.”

I closed my eyes, a sob tearing violently at my throat.

The pressure was unbearable, a crushing weight that made it almost impossible to breathe.

I pictured Mark’s pale face, the endless stacks of medical bills on our kitchen counter, and the terrifying reality of losing everything we had left.

For a terrifying, heartbreaking second, I actually considered surrendering.

I considered letting her win, just to guarantee that my husband would survive.

But then, my mind flashed back to the freezing sidewalk outside the hotel.

I saw Victoria kicking the bowl. I heard the sharp, metallic clatter of the coins hitting the concrete.

And I remembered the old man’s raspy, steady voice.

Arrogance has a way of returning to the person who carries it.

I opened my eyes, wiping the tears aggressively from my cheeks, and forced my mind to focus on the facts.

“You’re lying,” I said, my voice shaking but growing stronger with every word.

“You don’t have two million dollars to give me. You’re entirely broke, Victoria. That’s why you’re stealing.”

Victoria’s face hardened, her jaw clenching with pure rage.

Before she could respond, the heavy oak doors clicked loudly, and Julian Pendelton walked back into the boardroom.
