A heavy fist pounded on the metal door of the back office. The frame rattled.

"Maya!" Richard’s voice muffled through the steel, dripping with a terrifying, arrogant confidence. "I know you're in there. Open the door. The Sheriff is waiting outside. You're coming home, or you're going to a county cell. Your choice."

I looked at Marcus. The giant didn't look afraid. He looked like a man who had waited three years to open a door.

"Stand up, Maya," Marcus said softly. "It's time to introduce your ex-husband to his new reality."

Chapter 3: The Weight of Gravity

The metal door rattled again, harder this time, as a heavy boot slammed against the frame.

"I am not going to ask again!" Richard shouted from the hallway, his voice echoing off the narrow kitchen tiles. "Kick the lock, boys."

Marcus stepped forward. He didn't wait for them to breach. He simply reached out, flipped the deadbolt, and swung the door wide open.

Richard stood in the center of the diner's kitchen, flanked by his four tactical security guards. He looked perfectly tailored, his suit spotless amidst the grease fryers and shattered glass, exuding the absolute certainty of a man who had bought his way out of every consequence his entire life.

When he saw me standing behind Marcus, his eyes lit up with predatory victory.

"There she is," Richard said, a cruel, mocking smile spreading across his face. He extended a hand toward me as if coaxing a disobedient dog. "Come here, Maya. The game is over. You've embarrassed yourself enough for one morning."

I didn't move. I felt the familiar, crushing weight of his presence trying to force me down into submission, the years of psychological conditioning screaming at me to obey, to apologize, to shrink.

But then I looked at Marcus’s broad back. I looked at the shattered plastic of the flash drive on the office floor. The cage was already open. I just had to walk out.

"I'm not going anywhere with you, Richard," I said, and for the first time in four years, my voice didn't shake.

Richard’s smile vanished, replaced by an ugly, exposed fury. He dropped his hand.

"You think this man can protect you?" Richard scoffed, gesturing at Marcus. "From what? The law? Sheriff Miller has an arrest warrant sitting on his dashboard right now. It has your name on it, Maya. Corporate embezzlement, fraud, and theft. The paper trail at Vanguard Holdings is crystal clear, and you are the sole director. You step out from behind that jacket, you get in my car, and I make it go away. You stay here, you spend ten years in a federal penitentiary."

Richard crossed his arms, looking at Marcus with deep, arrogant pity. "You should have stayed out of it, big man. You backed a criminal."

Marcus didn't blink. He just stared at Richard with a look of absolute, terrifying calm.

"You talk a lot for a dead man walking," Marcus said.

Richard let out a sharp, incredulous laugh. "Excuse me?"

Marcus took one slow step out of the office, forcing Richard to take a half-step back to maintain his space.
