Chapter IV: The Confrontation
The suburban street fell completely dead silent.
Rachel stood frozen on the grass, the sunny morning suddenly feeling icy and gray. The pieces of the last six months—the secret late-night phone calls, the locked study door, the sudden refinance notices David had brushed off as administrative errors—slammed together with brutal, undeniable clarity.
Brenda slid the letter smoothly into the pocket of her pink tracksuit, turned on her heels, and walked back toward her own driveway with a parting sneer:
"Have a lovely day, neighbor. Tell David I’ll see him at the courthouse."
Left standing alone by the open mailbox, Rachel pulled out her phone, her knuckles white as she dialed David’s direct office line. As the dial tone rang, she stared at the empty slot of the mailbox, knowing that the quiet suburban life she had built was over before the afternoon even began.
