"I'm sorry, Mrs. Mercer," she whispered, "but if I tell them what really happened, I'm afraid someone will make me pay for it."

I reached for Mara's trembling hand before she could lower her eyes again.

"You've done nothing wrong," I told her.

She looked at me with a mixture of gratitude and fear.

Chloe immediately stepped forward.

"That's enough, this is becoming ridiculous."

Julian turned toward her.

"Be quiet, Chloe."

There was no anger in his voice, but the authority behind those words stopped her instantly.

He looked toward the hotel manager, who had arrived after noticing the gathering crowd.

"Please make sure this employee understands that she won't face retaliation for telling the truth."

The manager nodded firmly.

"Of course, Mr. Mercer."

Mara released a shaky breath.

I could see that she wanted to believe him, but years of working around demanding customers had taught her to be careful.

I gently squeezed her hand.

"Just tell us what you saw."

She looked at Chloe one final time.

Then she straightened her shoulders.

"Miss Bennett poured the drink deliberately."

A shocked murmur moved through the guests.

Mara's voice trembled, but she continued.

"She was standing directly in front of Mrs. Mercer, and nobody bumped her arm."

Chloe shook her head violently.

"That's a lie."

Mara flinched.

I stepped closer to the waitress.

"Let her finish."

Mara swallowed.

"I saw Miss Bennett lift the glass, and I heard her say she wanted to give everyone something to remember."

Several nearby guests nodded.

A woman in an emerald gown stepped forward.

"She's telling the truth."

I recognized her as the guest who had quietly tried to stop Chloe before the drink was poured.

The woman looked embarrassed.

"I saw everything, and I should have said something sooner."

Another guest raised his hand.

"So did I."

Then a businessman standing near the marble table spoke.

"My wife and I witnessed the entire incident."

Chloe looked around as the people she had hoped to impress began confirming the truth.

Her carefully constructed confidence was disappearing in front of everyone.

"You're all misunderstanding what happened," she insisted.

Nobody answered.

A guest who had been taking photographs earlier lifted his phone.

"I also have a short recording."

Chloe's head snapped toward him.

The man hesitated before showing Julian the screen.

From where I stood, I could see Chloe raising her glass while I remained motionless beside the railing.

The recording captured the cocktail pouring down my dress and the immediate reaction of the surrounding guests.

It also showed that Mara had been standing several feet away.

There was no accidental collision.

There was no misunderstanding.

Chloe had made a deliberate choice, and now the evidence was impossible to deny.

Julian handed the phone back.

"Thank you."

Chloe's lips began trembling.

"Julian, please."

He looked at her.

"You had several opportunities to tell the truth."

Tears filled her eyes.

"I was scared."

I studied her carefully.

For the first time that evening, the woman who had seemed determined to control everyone around her looked genuinely helpless.

But I couldn't forget that she had tried to escape the consequences of her behavior by destroying someone else's livelihood.

"Being frightened doesn't give you permission to hurt another person," I said.

Chloe looked toward me.

"I know."

I waited.

She lowered her eyes.

"I was jealous."

The admission came so quietly that I almost didn't hear it.

I said nothing.

She wiped at her cheeks.

"I spent the entire evening trying to get Julian to notice me because I thought that promotion would finally prove I was somebody."

Julian remained silent.

Chloe continued.

"Then I saw you standing there, looking so comfortable, and I couldn't understand why you didn't seem to care whether anyone noticed you."

Her voice cracked.

"I thought if I embarrassed you, people would laugh with me."

I felt a deep sadness settle over my anger.

She had spent years chasing recognition, only to become cruel toward someone who wasn't competing with her.

"You wanted to make yourself feel important by making me feel worthless," I said.

Chloe nodded.

"Yes."

It was the first completely honest answer she had given me.

I looked toward Mara, who was standing beside the hotel manager.

"Then you owe her an apology too."

Chloe turned toward the young waitress.

"I'm sorry I tried to blame you."

Mara nodded cautiously.

The apology couldn't erase the fear she had experienced, but at least the truth was finally being acknowledged.

Julian stepped forward.

"Chloe, your promotion is no longer under consideration, and you'll be meeting with human resources tomorrow morning about your conduct and continued employment."

She closed her eyes.

He continued.
