“Clean that up,” Sarah Montgomery ordered after throwing her iced coffee directly across my chest.

She needed me removed before that happened.

The humiliation had been camouflage.

My phone vibrated again.

AIRPORT SECURITY: HOLD POSITION.

ENTRY TEAM AT AIRCRAFT DOOR.

Sarah saw the message reflected faintly across my screen.

Her lips trembled.

“You do not understand what you are reading.”

“Then explain it.”

“There is nothing to explain.”

“Your access code was used this morning.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“It is in the log.”

“Logs can be wrong.”

“Security footage usually helps.”

Her face changed.

That sentence landed harder than anything else.

She looked toward the aircraft door.

Passengers followed her gaze.

Heavy footsteps sounded through the boarding bridge.

Sarah backed toward her seat.

Her fingers grabbed the pearl strand at her throat.

“Those people are not coming for me.”

Nobody answered.

The footsteps grew louder.

Sarah pulled at the necklace unconsciously.

The clasp snapped.

A single pearl dropped.

Then another.

Then the entire strand slid free.

White beads scattered across the carpet.

The tiny impacts sounded enormous in the silent cabin.

One rolled beneath my seat.

Another stopped against my shoe.

Sarah stared down at them.

For the first time, she looked completely powerless.

The door handle moved.

A flight attendant stepped aside.

The aircraft door opened.

Three uniformed airport security officers entered.

Behind them stood an airport operations investigator.

The lead officer held a clear evidence bag.

Inside was a printed photograph.

I recognized it immediately.

The gray package.

Sarah recognized it too.

Her knees seemed to weaken.

The officer stopped several feet from her.

“Sarah Montgomery?”

She said nothing.

“Ma’am?”

Sarah lifted her chin.

“Yes.”

He opened a sealed document.

“Before anyone leaves this aircraft, we need you to answer several questions.”

Sarah glanced toward me.

The officer continued.

“Your access credential was used inside a restricted service corridor this morning.”

Sarah’s voice came out thin.

“I was traveling.”

“We know.”

“I used several checkpoints.”

“We know that too.”

He looked at the document.

“One access event occurred near this aircraft before normal passenger boarding.”

Sarah shook her head.

“That was not me.”

The officer turned the page.

“Then we need to determine who used your credential.”

Sarah looked toward the cockpit.

The investigator noticed.

I saw him notice.

He stepped forward.

“Do you know anything about a package placed inside the forward cockpit compartment?”

Sarah did not answer.

The cabin remained silent.

Someone in the second row lowered their phone.

This no longer felt like entertainment.

It felt like evidence.

The investigator held up the photograph.

“Have you seen this object before?”

Sarah stared at it.

“No.”

The answer came too quickly.

The investigator looked at me.

“Mr. Thorne?”

“Yes.”

“We received your preservation request.”

“Good.”

“We have frozen all relevant digital records.”

“Has anyone entered the cockpit compartment?”

“Not since the hold was placed.”

Sarah interrupted.

“This is insane.”

The officer looked at her.

“Ma’am, please remain where you are.”

“My husband works for this company.”

The sentence sounded very different now.

Earlier, she had used Daniel’s name as a weapon.

Now she used it like a shield.

The officer remained unmoved.

“We are aware of your husband’s position.”

Sarah looked around for support.

Nobody offered it.

“You are treating me like some criminal because this man made a phone call.”

The investigator spoke.

“No.”

He held up the photograph.

“We are asking questions because your access code appears in a restricted record.”

Sarah pointed toward me.

“He set this up.”

A passenger near the window laughed once in disbelief.

Sarah spun toward him.

“What is funny?”

He shook his head.

“Nothing.”

“Then stop staring.”

The officer intervened.

“Ma’am.”

Sarah faced forward again.

Her breathing was shallow.

I picked up the pearl near my shoe.

For a strange moment, it seemed almost symbolic.

Minutes earlier, the necklace had represented authority to Sarah.

Now it was broken across an aircraft carpet.

I placed the pearl on the armrest beside me.

“Mr. Thorne,” the investigator said, “we need to inspect the compartment.”

“Do it.”

Sarah immediately stepped forward.

“No.”

Every face turned toward her.

She realized what she had done.

The investigator’s expression sharpened.

“Why not?”

“I mean passengers should be removed first.”

“Why?”

“For safety.”

“What safety concern?”

Sarah looked trapped.

“You just said there is an unidentified package.”

The investigator nodded.
