There was a long silence, lasting perhaps ten seconds, broken only by the low, distant hum of the midday cicadas outside the barred window.

Then Cleary’s voice carried through the pine door. It lacked the swagger he had used on the highway. It lacked the sharp, bullying edge he had used on his deputy.

"Oak Haven substation," Cleary said, his voice flat, cautious, and defensive. "Sheriff Cleary speaking."

A pause followed. Even through two heavy doors, I could hear the faint, rapid chatter of a voice on the other end of the line—a cadence too crisp, too flat, and too clipped to belong to any state trooper or county dispatcher.

"Now hold on just a minute," Cleary said, his volume rising as he tried to reassert control. "I don't know who you think you're—"

He was cut off. The voice on the receiver spoke without pausing, the rapid-fire syllables vibrating through the earpiece loudly enough that the tone carried into the holding hallway like static electricity.

"I said hold on!" Cleary shouted into the receiver, his voice cracking with sudden, unvarnished panic. "This is an active county facility! We conducted a lawful stop on a suspicious individual traveling without—"

Another sudden silence.

Cleary didn't finish the sentence. The line stayed open, but he didn't speak.

In the cell, I pulled my shoulders back against the concrete wall, brought my boots flat onto the dusty floor, and looked up at the barred window.

Far above the tree line to the west, barely audible over the valley heat, a low, rhythmic thumping began to disturb the air—the unmistakable, heavy chop of twin turbine blades cutting through the thick summer atmosphere, coming down fast along the spine of Route 9.

CHAPTER 3: The Command That Cut Through

The twin turbine rumble did not stay above the trees. It dropped like a lead weight straight into the basin of the valley, vibrating through the lime-washed cinderblocks and rattling the steel tray of unlogged keys sitting on the intake counter.

In Cell Two, the vibration traveled directly up through my boots and into my spine. It was a rhythmic, bone-deep thump that anyone who has spent twenty minutes near an airfield recognizes instantly: two UH-60 Black Hawks flying low, cutting hard under civilian transponder corridors, following the coordinates of a dead transponder signal to its terminal stop.

Through the heavy pine door separating the cells from the front office, the sound of Boyd Cleary’s voice had ceased entirely.

There was only the dry scrape of boot leather against linoleum as Toby Miller backed away from the desk, followed by the metallic click of a drawer latch being yanked open so violently the runners jammed in the housing.

The wooden door swung open with a shudder.

Cleary stood in the frame. His face had shifted from its mottled, sun-scalded purple to a pale, grayish yellow. He had tucked his thumbs into his duty belt, but his fingers were twitching against the leather, unable to settle into the swagger he had worn on the highway. In his left hand, clutched so tightly that the skin over his knuckles went white, was my unbranded transceiver.

The small, recessed LED on the side, dark for the last twenty minutes, was pulsing a hard, steady amber.

Behind him, Deputy Miller stood pressed against the edge of the intake counter, holding the heavy Bakelite red phone receiver in one trembling hand like an unexploded shell.

"Boyd," Miller whispered, his voice pitching into a cracked falsetto that barely cleared the roar of the incoming rotor wash. "The switchboard... they won't disconnect. The colonel on the line said if we hang up before the convoy reaches the intersection, he's filing an active sabotage writ against the town corporation."

Cleary didn't look at his deputy. He kept his eyes locked on me, staring through the heavy bars as if waiting for me to dissolve into something he could control with a misdemeanor citation.
