Vance walked behind the counter, unclipped the heavy brass key ring from his belt, and unlocked the reinforced steel corridor door. The lock gave a heavy, echoing thud as the bolt retracted.

"Maya," I called out as the door swung open into the narrow concrete hallway.

Cell three was at the far end, behind a set of painted iron bars. Maya was sitting upright on the welded steel bench, her hands resting calmly on her knees. Her hair was damp from the initial stop on Route 9, and the gray wool of her slacks was dusty from the intake room, but her eyes were clear, focused, and steady. When she saw Ellis and me walk down the corridor, her posture didn't break. She stood up, smoothing the front of her work shirt.

"Commander Ellis," Maya said through the bars, her voice quiet and completely devoid of the panic Vance had tried to force out of her. "Cargo enclosure integrity is verified at ninety-two percent. Transit log was interrupted at twenty-one fourteen by Deputy Clint Miller."

"We have the unit secured, Specialist Linwood," Ellis replied, stepping up to the cell door. She turned her head toward Vance, who stood five paces back, his hands hanging limp at his sides. "Unlock this cell, Sheriff. Now."

Vance inserted the heavy iron key into the cage mechanism, twisting it with a slow, grinding wrench. The barred door slid open on its steel rollers, screeching against the concrete floor before hitting the rubber stop.

Maya stepped out into the hallway. She didn't look at Vance. She walked straight past him, her boots clicking cleanly against the floor, and stopped at the booking counter.

"My personal effects," Maya said, looking directly at the plastic bin Clint had abandoned beside the typewriter.

Clint, who had followed us inside like a ghost trailing an executioner, quickly scrambled around the counter. His hands shook as he pushed her handbag, her driver's license, and her black government-issue phone across the wooden surface.

"I need the original triplicate slip, Sheriff," Ellis said, laying her hand flat over the paper Clint had signed. "And the dash camera recording from Deputy Miller’s vehicle between twenty-one hundred and twenty-one thirty hours. Do not attempt to reformat that memory drive. An investigator from the Department of Transportation will arrive at seven AM to impound the cruiser's telemetry recorder."

Vance leaned his hands against the counter, his knuckles white against the dark oak, staring at the floorboards. "You got your courier, Commander. Take her and clear out of my station."

"This station is an open scene of investigation, Sheriff," Ellis answered, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper. "You used a county patrol unit to ambush a federal transit asset, falsified an obstruction charge to conceal an illegal search, and attempted to bypass a digital lock with a crowbar. You aren't closing this docket tonight. You're going to spend the weekend explaining to the county commission why their municipal liability insurance is about to be canceled."

Ellis took the triplicate form, folded it once, and slid it into her leather warrant folder. She nodded to Maya. "Transport vehicle is waiting out front, Specialist. Your equipment is already being loaded into my lead truck. Let's go."

Maya picked up her belongings, sliding the sealed government phone into her pocket and checking the display. The small green diode glowed steady and calm. She looked at me, a tight, relieved nod passing between us, before we walked together out through the double doors and back into the cool night air.

Outside, the marshal had already closed the trunk of the rented sedan. The heavy pelican case was securely stowed in the cargo bay of the lead Suburban, its rear doors clicking shut with a heavy, armored thud. Clint’s cruiser sat silent and useless under the orange security lamp, its engine idling low in the mist, stripped of any authority it had held an hour before.
