"You just extorted General Frank Harrison, Director of the State Public Safety Commission," Commander Miller barked, ripping the badge and shoulder patches straight from Vance's uniform. "You've run this permit shake-down for the last time."

Chapter V: True Authority

Commander Miller reached into Vance's breast pocket, retrieving the stolen stack of hundred-dollar bills, and snapped heavy steel handcuffs around the disgraced deputy's wrists.

Commander Miller walked over to the blue pickup truck, extending both hands to return the cash to Director Harrison with a sharp, respectful salute.

"General," Commander Miller said with deep regret. "We apologize for the disgrace brought upon this badge. The grand jury indictment is already signed."

Director Harrison took the money, slipped it back into his pocket, and looked down at the former deputy being shoved into the back of a state interceptor in utter humiliation.

"A badge is meant to protect the highway, deputy," Harrison said quietly. "Not line your pockets."

Director Harrison climbed back into his classic pickup, fired up the engine, and pulled smoothly back onto Route 12, leaving behind a clean road under the true, unyielding rule of justice.
