Over the following weeks, these small, quiet encounters accumulated gradually — Anthony finding reasons to be present during Sarah's rare permitted visits with Ellie, brief conversations in hallways that grew slightly longer each time, a particular attentiveness that Sarah found herself, despite every warning instinct, beginning to genuinely look forward to.

It was during one such conversation, nearly a month into her employment, that Anthony asked the question that would eventually unravel everything Sarah had spent two years believing about her husband's death.

"Evelyn mentioned you were widowed recently," he said. "I'm sorry for your loss, Mrs. Bennett. May I ask what happened?"

Sarah hesitated, uncertain how much to share with a man whose own business dealings occupied such uncertain legal territory, before something in his steady, genuine attention convinced her to answer honestly.

"My husband was an accountant," she said. "For a freight company called Harbor Crest Logistics. He died in a car accident two years ago, but the company vanished six months later, and all his work files disappeared before I could ever collect them. I've never fully believed it was really an accident."

Anthony went very still, his expression shifting into something considerably more focused than his earlier easy warmth.

"Harbor Crest Logistics," he repeated slowly. "Sarah, I need you to tell me everything you remember about your husband's work there."

Chapter 2 - What Daniel Knew

"Why does that name matter to you," Sarah asked, watching Anthony's expression carefully, understanding, from the sudden tension in his posture, that she had just said something considerably more significant than she'd initially realized.

"Harbor Crest Logistics operated shipping routes along the same corridor my family's legitimate businesses use," Anthony said carefully. "I had a business rival, a man named Victor Castellano, who I believe used shell companies exactly like Harbor Crest to launder proceeds from operations he ran independent of any territorial agreements with my organization. If your husband was working as an accountant for that company two years ago, he may have had access to records considerably more dangerous than anyone at that firm ever disclosed to him."

Sarah felt something cold settle in her stomach, the two-year-old suspicion she'd carried quietly, unable to voice it to police who dismissed her concerns as simple grief, suddenly finding a shape she hadn't expected.

"You think Daniel found something he wasn't supposed to see," she said slowly.

"I think it's possible," Anthony said. "I don't want to give you false hope before I've actually verified anything. But Sarah, if Castellano was using that company to hide money, and your husband's accounting work brought him close enough to notice irregularities, that would explain both his death and the company's sudden disappearance considerably better than a simple accident."

"Can you find out," Sarah asked, her voice trembling with a hope she hadn't allowed herself to feel in two years. "Please, Anthony. I need to know what actually happened to him.

Anthony studied her for a long moment, something complicated moving behind his careful, controlled expression. "I can find out," he said. "But I need you to understand what that might mean, Sarah. If Castellano was responsible for your husband's death, pursuing that truth puts you and Ellie in a position considerably more dangerous than simply working in this house as a housekeeper."

"I've already lost my husband to whatever they did," Sarah said. "I'm not interested in pretending the danger doesn't exist simply because acknowledging it feels frightening. I want the truth, regardless of what it costs to find it."

Anthony nodded slowly, and over the following two weeks, working carefully through channels Sarah understood only in broad, uncomfortable outline, he assembled a picture of exactly what had happened to Daniel Bennett two years earlier.
