Thirty seconds later, a tall woman in a dark navy suit and steel-rimmed glasses emerged from the executive corridor behind the tellers. Her brass nameplate read Margaret Lind, Chief Fiduciary Compliance Officer.

“You’re Elise Morgan? ” Lind asked, her eyes narrowing as she studied my face. “We have an Elise Morgan signed into Conference Room C right now with Senior Vice President Kincaid. ”

“That woman presented a temporary paper driver’s license issued yesterday afternoon in Lombard,” I said, handing Lind the O’Hare gate audit log. “She boarded flight 1184 under my name using an airline schedule override authorized by Richard Vance’s personal telephone number. This is the carrier audit slip, timestamped twenty-two minutes before departure. ”

Lind took the paper. She read the thermal printout, her jaw tightening as she saw the override stamp and the matching Illinois telephone number.

“Follow me,” Lind said, turning sharply toward the private elevator bank. “Quietly. ”

The elevator descended to the subterranean security level. The doors slid back with a soft chime to reveal a climate-controlled vestibule lined with walnut paneling and stainless-steel security doors.

Ahead of us, through the reinforced glass partition of Conference Room C, sat Richard Vance and the woman in the camel-hair coat. Across the mahogany table from them sat Donald Kincaid, North Shore Trust’s Senior Vice President of Private Wealth. On the center of the table rested the heavy, two-foot-long steel cylinder of safe deposit box 408, retrieved early from the inner vault.

Kincaid was holding an ink pen out toward the imposter.

“Just place your initial on line four of the custody transfer form, Ms. Morgan,” Kincaid was saying smoothly, his back to the door. “Then we’ll fit the second key and release the encrypted hard drives to Mr. Vance as surviving spouse. ”

“Stop writing,” I said, pushing the door open.

The latch clicked against the jamb with the crack of a pistol shot.

Richard turned first. His eyes widened, the color draining instantly from his cheeks, leaving his skin the shade of winter frost. For the first time since Clara’s funeral, the veneer of aristocratic calm dropped entirely from his face.

“Elise? ” Richard whispered. His voice was a thin, dry wheeze.

The woman in the camel-hair coat pulled her hands off the table as if the polished wood had caught fire. Her fingers trembled against her coat pocket.

“Who authorized this person into the secure area? ” Kincaid snapped, rising instantly from his leather chair and placing his broad palms flat on the documents. He was a thick-necked man with slicked gray hair and the cold, unyielding demeanor of a career banker accustomed to dictating terms. “Lind, get security down here. This is a private estate unsealing under a sealed court petition. ”

“The petition is facially invalid, Mr. Kincaid,” I said, walking directly to the opposite side of the table. I dropped my leather portfolio onto the mahogany and pulled out the first document. “This is an official administrative certified record from the Illinois Secretary of State Index Department. Marcus Hayes’s notary commission was suspended on October 12 following a criminal real estate inquiry in DuPage County. Every jurat he executed after that date is legally void. ”

Kincaid didn't look at the paper. “That is an out-of-state matter. The Minnesota probate court issued an unsealing directive based on filed papers—”

“The emergency petition was filed under Minnesota General Practice Rule 11,” Margaret Lind interrupted, stepping between Kincaid and the steel deposit box. Her voice was ice. “A void acknowledgment renders the petition non-operative as a matter of law. An unverified instrument cannot authorize the release of dual-custody trust assets. ”

“This is an administrative clerical error,” Richard said, finding his voice again, though his fingers were twitching inside his pockets. He stepped toward Lind, turning on that familiar, persuasive warmth he had used on Clara’s doctors. “Margaret, Elise is my late wife’s sister. She has been severely distressed since Clara’s passing. We expedited this inspection to prevent the estate’s corporate assets from freezing during tax filings. Elise agreed to this yesterday. ”

“I didn't agree to anything, Richard,” I said. “And the woman sitting next to you isn't me. ”

I looked straight at the imposter. “Show Ms. Lind your identification. ”

The woman looked desperately at Richard. Her breath came in short, shallow hitches. “Richard, you said this was pre-approved. You said there wouldn't be any questions at the desk. ”

“Quiet,” Richard hissed under his breath.

“She showed a temporary paper license,” Kincaid insisted, his voice rising in panic as he realized Lind was no longer listening to him. “The photograph was verified by the Lombard branch of the state bureau—”
