Then another.

A tall man in a dark suit walked through the door.

He looked at Walter.

Then at Emily.

And stopped.

His expression changed instantly.

“Emily Carter?”

“Yes.”

The man swallowed.

“My name is Daniel Bennett.”

Emily looked at Walter.

“Who is he?”

Walter answered quietly.

“Someone who knew your father.”

Daniel stared at the photograph.

Then at Emily.

“Thomas never told us he had a daughter.”

Emily's voice hardened.

“You knew my father, but you didn't know I existed?”

“We knew about you.”

“Then why have I never heard your name?”

Daniel didn't answer.

Walter did.

“Because your father wanted you far away from us.”

Emily's anger turned into confusion.

“Why?”

Walter took a slow breath.

“Because the company we built wasn't the company he thought it would become.”

Emily's father had always described himself as an ordinary electrician.

He had never talked about business.

Never mentioned investors.

Never spoke about patents.

Never talked about ownership.

But the documents Walter showed Emily told a completely different story.

Thomas Carter had been one of the earliest engineers at Bennett Manufacturing.

He had helped design an electrical system that later became the foundation of the company's rapid expansion.

Walter had recognized his talent.

The two became business partners.

Thomas received shares.

He helped develop several major projects.

And for a while, the two men were inseparable.

Then came the Phoenix Project.

It was supposed to be the biggest industrial expansion in company history.

Millions of dollars were invested.

Hundreds of workers were involved.

And Thomas discovered that the safety certifications for several subcontractors were false.

He demanded that the project be stopped.

Walter wanted more time.

The board wanted silence.

Thomas refused both.

He threatened to take the evidence outside the company.

That was the moment everything collapsed.

Walter admitted that he had made the worst decision of his life.

He chose the company.

Thomas chose the workers.

They never truly recovered their friendship.

Thomas resigned.

He gave up most of his shares.

He disappeared from the corporate world.

And he went home to raise his daughter.

Emily listened in silence.

“My father never told me any of this.”

“He wanted you to have a normal life,” Walter said.

“We struggled.”

“I know.”

“My mother worked constantly.”

“I know.”

“We lived in a tiny house.”

“I know.”

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

“Then why didn't you help us?”

Walter lowered his head.

“Because your father made me promise not to interfere.”

“Why?”

“He didn't want you growing up believing that money was the answer to everything.”

Emily laughed bitterly.

“He left us with nothing.”

Walter looked at her.
