Chapter 3
Twenty seconds.
Fine.
Thirty.
Fine.
Then Maya escaped a second time.
Someone shouted:
“Don’t let her embarrass you, Ryan!”
The words were stupid.
Probably meant as a joke.
Ryan heard them.
Maya felt the difference.
His pressure increased.
Not dangerous.
Clear.
She said:
“Technical.”
Ryan answered:
“I am.”
There it was again.
His definition overriding hers.
Maya almost stopped.
Then saw the clock.
Fifteen seconds.
Finish.
That was her mistake.
Not because she caused what followed.
She did not.
Because she heard her own boundary become uncertain and decided the remaining time was small enough to ignore it.
Ryan moved behind.
Maya defended.
Ten seconds.
He secured a choke position.
Maya hand fought.
Bell.
She tapped.
Ryan held.
Referee shouted.
Maya tapped again.
He held another moment.
Then released.
Now everything after that moment seemed loud.
Medic.
Voices.
Ryan explaining.
Crowd whispering.
Samuel walking forward.
“Now face me.”
Then Maya’s own voice.
No.
For the first time that afternoon, no worked immediately.
Samuel stopped.
That mattered more than she expected.
The event director, Carla Nguyen, ended the mat for ten minutes.
She collected the referee’s statement.
Asked the videographer to preserve original footage.
Asked Maya whether she wanted police or emergency medical evaluation.
Maya declined police.
Accepted medical check.
No sign of serious injury.
Carla removed Ryan from further competition for the day pending review.
Ryan protested.
“What rule did I break?”
Carla stared.
“You continued after the bell and tap.”
“I released.”
“Late.”
“How late?”
“Long enough that the referee had to intervene.”
Ryan folded his arms.
“So I’m disqualified.”
“Yes.”
“From exhibitions too?”
“Yes.”
“Then what about him?”
He pointed toward Samuel.
Carla looked.
Samuel was drinking coffee near the wall.
“What about him?”
“He challenged me.”
Samuel called from twenty feet away:
“I offered a supervised technical round if everyone approved.”
Carla smiled despite herself.
Ryan did not.
Daniel walked toward Samuel.
“Samuel Reed?”
Samuel nodded.
“You remember me?”
“Referee seminar.”
“Charlotte.”
“2012.”
Daniel laughed.
“You remember everything.”
“No.”
“I forgot where I parked.”
Daniel looked toward Ryan.
Then back.
“You were serious about the round?”
Samuel glanced toward Maya.
“Only if she’s okay with it now.”
Daniel looked surprised.
Samuel continued:
“She is the person this started with.”
“I’m not borrowing her moment without permission.”
Daniel nodded.
They approached Maya.
Samuel stayed several feet away.
“You said don’t turn it into another fight.”
Maya nodded.
“I meant it.”
“So do I.”
He continued:
“I’m willing to do a short technical round later.”
“Not to punish him.”
“Not to prove I’m tougher.”
“If you think that makes this worse, I won’t.”
Maya thought.
“Why do you want to do it?”
Samuel took time.
Good.
“I want him to feel the difference between being controlled and being owned.”
Maya frowned.
“Explain.”
“He’s good.”
“He probably spends a lot of time knowing he could continue after other people tap.”
“Because he understands the position.”
“He knows whether the danger is immediate.”
“He knows whether there’s space.”
“That knowledge can turn into a bad habit.”
He paused.
“He starts thinking the tap is advice instead of authority.”
Maya looked toward Ryan.
Then Samuel.
“What would the round show?”
Samuel smiled faintly.
“Maybe nothing.”
“Maybe he submits me in ten seconds.”
“I’m sixty-nine.”
A few people nearby laughed.
Samuel continued:
“But if he taps, I release before I decide whether he could continue.”
“That’s the point.”
Maya thought.
Then:
“Fine.”
“One condition.”
“What?”
“No cheering if he taps.”
Samuel nodded.
“Agreed.”
Carla agreed to allow the round after the scheduled matches ended.
No money.
No challenge prize.
No unofficial fight.
Technical grappling.
Two minutes.
Daniel referee.
Medic present.
Ryan had to agree.
At first, he almost refused.
That would have been reasonable.
Then ego entered.
The entire room had seen the late release.
Now an older stranger was offering a round.
Ryan imagined what refusing would look like.
That was exactly why Daniel stopped him.
“Do you want to do it?”
Ryan stared.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To shut him up.”
Daniel shook his head.
“Then no.”
“What?”
“You heard me.”
Ryan looked furious.
Daniel continued:
“If you go in trying to repair your reputation, you’ll make the same mistake twice.”
Ryan glanced toward Samuel.
“What am I supposed to say?”
“I don’t know.”
“Think.”
They stood quietly.
Ryan hated quiet when he was angry.
Eventually he said:
“I want to know what he thinks he can show me.”
Daniel nodded.
“Better.”
“Is that enough?”
“Maybe.”
Ryan looked toward Maya.
She was speaking with Tasha.
“Does she hate me?”
Daniel stared.
“That is not the question.”
“I know.”
“Then why ask?”
Ryan looked down.
“Because I want this to be one bad moment.”
Daniel nodded.
“And if it isn’t?”
Ryan had no answer.
The technical round began forty minutes later.
The event had mostly ended.
Many people stayed.
Of course they did.
Carla made an announcement.
“This is not a grudge match.”
“Two-minute technical grappling round.”
“Both athletes agreed.”
“No hard takedowns.”
“Tap or verbal stop ends the exchange immediately.”
“Daniel Mercer refereeing.”
“Anyone who turns this into a circus can leave.”
Several people laughed.
Then she added:
“No recording unless both participants consent.”
Samuel shook his head.
“No.”
Ryan looked toward him.
“You care that much?”
“Yes.”
