THE ACQUISITION AT REGISTER THREE

Chapter I: The Carton of Milk and the Empty Purse

The fluorescent lights of the Grand Mart supermarket hummed softly overhead as a cold evening rain tapped against the massive front windows. Shoppers with overflowing metal carts queued impatiently along the checkout lanes, eager to escape the damp chill outside.

At Register 3, an elderly woman stood with trembling hands, clutching a worn cloth shopping bag. Her gray hair fell in wisps around a frail, exhausted face, and her oversized olive rain jacket looked decades old. On the black conveyor belt sat a single item: a blue-and-white carton of Senior Nutritional Milk.

The digital scanner beeped as nineteen-year-old cashier Lily keyed in the item. The total flashed on the customer screen: $4.89.

The old woman fumbled through her frayed purse, her hands shaking violently. After several agonizing moments, she pulled out only a single crumpled one-dollar bill and a handful of dull copper pennies.

Tears welled in the woman's sunken eyes as she looked up with a cracking voice:

"I'm so sorry, dear... I thought I had the coupon with me. I haven't had anything since yesterday..."

Lily didn't hesitate. Pulling her own black leather wallet from her apron pocket, she slid a ten-dollar bill into the register drawer and gently wrapped both hands around the carton, pushing it into the old woman's hands.
