The difference was immediate.
Nobody checked his face before allowing it.
Jake felt that too.
He turned toward Daniels.
“I shouldn’t have jumped on you earlier.”
Daniels looked uncomfortable.
“You’re good, Staff Sergeant.”
“No.”
Jake shook his head.
“That’s another automatic answer.”
Daniels hesitated.
Jake waited.
Finally Daniels nodded.
“Yeah.”
Jake accepted it.
“That’s fair.”
Emma watched the exchange.
Nothing had become perfect.
Daniels remained cautious.
Jake remained embarrassed.
The room still carried the weight of what had happened.
That made the moment believable.
Briggs picked up the folder.
“I’m putting this back.”
Jake looked at it once more.
Then he nodded.
“Do it.”
Briggs returned the folder to the cabinet.
He locked the door.
Jake watched.
The mystery remained partially closed.
Emma appreciated that.
Her experience had been confirmed.
It had not been turned into another spectacle.
Jake stood.
He walked toward her.
The soldiers noticed.
Emma stayed still.
He stopped at a respectful distance.
“No audience speech.”
Emma raised an eyebrow.
Jake glanced around.
Several soldiers smiled.
“Okay, that sounded like an audience speech.”
Emma almost laughed.
Jake looked down.
Then he met her eyes.
“I was wrong.”
Emma waited.
“I treated your assignment like it defined your ability.”
She nodded.
“Yes.”
“I used the room against you.”
Another nod.
“Yes.”
“And I threatened to embarrass you because I thought I already knew how it would end.”
Emma remained quiet.
Jake inhaled.
“I’m sorry.”
There was no applause.
Briggs did not order anyone to acknowledge it.
Emma preferred that.
She looked at Jake for several seconds.
“Thank you.”
He nodded.
“That’s it?”
“What were you expecting?”
“I don’t know.”
Emma studied him.
“A speech?”
Jake almost smiled.
“Probably.”
“You’ve heard enough speeches today.”
That finally drew a small laugh from him.
It disappeared quickly.
“I deserved that.”
Emma shook her head.
“That wasn’t punishment.”
“What was it?”
“An observation.”
Jake looked toward his feet.
“My heel really was coming up?”
“Yes.”
He sighed.
“Of course it was.”
Emma smiled.
This time, Jake saw it clearly.
He looked at her.
“There. You did it again.”
“What?”
“Smiled.”
Emma shrugged.
Jake pointed toward her.
“You told me to earn another one.”
Daniels laughed.
Several soldiers joined him.
Jake turned toward them.
The old instinct visibly rose.
Everyone saw it.
He almost corrected the room.
Instead, Jake stopped.
He lowered his hand.
“Never mind.”
The laughter continued naturally.
Emma looked at Briggs.
The instructor’s expression barely changed.
But there was approval in his eyes.
Jake saw that too.
For once, he did not ask for it.
Briggs clapped his hands once.
“All right. Enough theater.”
The soldiers straightened.
“Back to work.”
The group began moving.
Some returned to the heavy bags.
Others collected gloves.
A pair of soldiers stepped onto another mat.
The normal sounds of the Fort Liberty gym gradually returned.
Rubber soles squeaked.
Velcro ripped open.
A timer beeped.
Someone restarted the jump rope.
Jake remained near Emma.
“You staying?”
“For training?”
“Yes.”
Emma looked at the mat.
“Was that not training?”
Jake nodded.
“More than I expected.”
“That sounds familiar.”
He gave her a tired look.
“I’m trying here.”
“I noticed.”
They stood quietly.
Jake looked toward Daniels.
The specialist was laughing with another soldier.
He did not immediately stop when Jake looked over.
Jake watched him.
