Beside him stood Command Sergeant Major Nolan Price.

Price had said nothing since Olivia entered the firing area.

Hayes noticed his attention.

“You know her?”

Price kept watching Olivia.

“I recognize the name.”

“Should I know it?”

Price did not answer.

On the line, Olivia lowered herself behind the rifle.

Her movement was simple and controlled.

She aligned her shoulders.

Her cheek settled against the stock.

Her breathing slowed.

Price stepped forward.

Hayes looked toward him.

“What?”

Price narrowed his eyes.

“That position.”

“What about it?”

“I have seen it before.”

Hayes studied Olivia again.

The announcer lifted his microphone.

“One attempt for each competitor.”

The bleachers quieted.

“Target distance is two thousand one hundred thirty meters.”

Travis settled into Lane One.

“Center impact wins.”

Blake checked his card.

“If both competitors hit center, measured deviation decides the champion.”

Travis looked sideways.

“Try not to slow us down, Captain.”

Olivia remained behind the scope.

She gave no answer.

The range officer raised one arm.

Hundreds of people leaned forward.

The wind flags shifted again.

Price kept staring at Olivia’s worn rifle.

Something about his silence seemed heavier than the coming shot.

Yet no explanation came.

The final round remained ahead.

So did whatever Price remembered.

Rising Tension

Across the country, outside Fayetteville, North Carolina, another training room gathered around another quiet woman.

“Get off the mat before you make yourself look ridiculous,” Lieutenant Ryan Brooks shouted.

Olivia Grant already had one foot inside the boundary.

She completed the step.

A laugh came from beside the water station.

Another followed near the benches.

Soon, amusement moved through the special operations training center.

Olivia adjusted the strap on her glove.

Ryan waited across from her.

He wore black training gear.

Athletic tape covered his wrists.

His shoulders were broad.

His confidence occupied more space than his body.

“This isn’t yoga,” he said.

Several soldiers struck the benches with their palms.

Someone whistled.

Olivia looked toward the center mark.

She did not acknowledge Ryan.

That bothered him.

“I’ll make it easy.”

Still nothing.

Ryan’s smile became thinner.

The supervising sergeant held a clipboard near the timer.

He looked from Ryan to Olivia.

“Grant, you certain?”

Olivia finally turned.

“Yes, Sergeant.”

The sergeant hesitated.

The pause lasted barely a moment.

Ryan did not notice what caused it.

He was facing the audience.

“Everybody relax,” Ryan said.

“This won’t take long.”

More laughter followed.

Olivia walked toward the center of the mat.

Ryan bounced lightly on his feet.

The morning session had already fed his confidence.

He had controlled two younger soldiers.

He had forced a visiting Marine into a poor position.

People had noticed him.

Ryan enjoyed being noticed.

Olivia had spent most of the session sitting alone.

She had not hidden.

She had not looked intimidated.

She had simply watched.

That annoyed Ryan.

He had performed well.

She had shown no admiration.

When her name appeared for his round, he decided she needed correcting.

The thought had nothing to do with training.

He told himself otherwise.

The gym stood behind two secured gates outside Fayetteville.

Pine trees surrounded the facility.

Visitors did not wander inside.

The people training there came from multiple American military branches.

Some units were openly identified.

Others were not.

A sign above the mats carried four large words.

HUMILITY KEEPS YOU ALIVE.

Ryan rarely looked at that sign.

Another slogan interested him more.

WIN BEFORE THEY KNOW THEY LOST.

He had quoted that one twice that morning.

The sergeant stepped between them.

“Standard controls.”

Ryan lifted his chin.

“Submissions finish the round.”

Olivia flexed her fingers.

“Break immediately when I call it.”

Ryan nodded.

Olivia nodded.

“Understood?” the sergeant asked.

“Understood,” Ryan replied.

“Understood,” Olivia said.

Ryan leaned closer.

“You can tap whenever you need.”

Olivia met his eyes.

“I know.”

Her answer lasted two words.

Still, something shifted.

The sergeant cleared his throat.

A soldier near the benches stopped smiling.

The woman near the back lowered her hand from her mouth.

Ryan saw none of it.

The wall timer displayed three minutes.

The sergeant moved away.

Olivia raised her hands.

Ryan raised his.

The bell sounded.

Ryan surged forward.

He wanted the first exchange to settle everything.

He expected Olivia to retreat.

Most smaller opponents did.

Distance made them nervous.

Pressure stiffened their posture.

Ryan had built much of his success around that reaction.

Olivia stepped forward instead.

Ryan’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

His right hand reached toward her shoulder.

Olivia moved inside the angle.

Her hip turned.

His force continued without finding its target.

She caught his wrist.

Ryan tried changing direction.

Her grip shifted.

His shoulder followed.

His balance disappeared.

A hard impact echoed through the building.

Ryan landed on his back.

The laughter ended instantly.

For a heartbeat, nobody understood what happened.

Ryan rolled.

Anger replaced surprise.

He drove upward with strength.

Olivia moved with him.

She did not fight his power.

She redirected it.

His arm folded across his chest.

His hips turned away from leverage.

His legs searched for traction.

Olivia settled her knee into position.

Ryan stopped moving.

He tried twisting.

She adjusted.

He bridged hard.

She lowered her weight.

He grabbed for fabric.

Her hand removed his grip before it formed.

The timer showed 2:18.

Less than one minute had passed.

Ryan’s face reddened.

The room waited for his escape.

It never came.

Some soldiers assumed he had slipped earlier.

Others expected a planned reversal.

A few leaned forward, waiting for Ryan’s strength to matter.

Olivia allowed none of it.

Ryan breathed harder.

“Get off.”

Olivia looked down.

“That isn’t a command position.”

The sentence landed across the silent room.

Ryan stared at her.

Several soldiers glanced toward the instructor.

The sergeant did not look surprised.

That was the first detail Ryan finally noticed.

His breathing changed.

“Break her control,” someone whispered.
