Then frowned.

“Seat?”

“2A.”

He scanned the boarding pass lying on Amara’s tray table.

The screen beeped.

A normal passenger profile appeared for less than one second.

Then vanished.

The tablet locked.

A dark blue screen filled with the Crown Meridian logo.

Charles frowned.

Sophie leaned closer.

Then the confidential alert loaded.

EXECUTIVE TRANSITION PROTOCOL

Charles stopped breathing.

Sophie read the first line.

Her hand rose toward her mouth.

Charles scrolled.

The alert displayed:

AMARA CARTER

MAJORITY SHAREHOLDER

INCOMING CHAIRWOMAN OF THE BOARD

EXECUTIVE TRANSITION EFFECTIVE 08:00 TOMORROW

Below it:

CONFIDENTIAL SERVICE REVIEW TRAVEL

DO NOT ALTER STANDARD PASSENGER PROCEDURE

Charles stared.

The color disappeared from his face.

Amara remained still.

Maya made a small tired noise against her chest.

Then Sophie noticed another section.

“Sir…”

Charles did not respond.

Sophie read again.

A second name appeared beneath the executive transition notice.

CHARLES WHITMORE

OUTGOING CHAIRMAN

MANDATORY GOVERNANCE REVIEW: 08:30 TOMORROW

SERVICE CULTURE / COMPLAINT OVERSIGHT / EXECUTIVE CONDUCT

Charles’s fingers tightened around the tablet.

For the first time since the confrontation began, he looked afraid.

Not angry.

Afraid.

Amara watched.

Sophie looked between them.

Charles finally whispered:

“You’re Amara Carter?”

“Yes.”

He stared.

Everyone in corporate aviation knew the Carter acquisition.

They simply did not know what the new majority shareholder looked like.

The deal had been executed through Carter Atlantic Holdings.

Press coverage focused on the investment group.

Amara had deliberately avoided interviews.

The transition announcement was scheduled for the following morning.

Charles had met with attorneys.

Bankers.

Board members.

Consultants.

But never with Amara personally.

He had expected their first meeting to occur inside the Manhattan headquarters at 8 a.m.

Not in row two.

Not with her infant daughter soaked against her chest.

Not while his own misconduct review glowed beneath her name.

Charles lowered the tablet.

“Ms. Carter.”

Amara said nothing.

“I didn’t realize.”

Her face did not change.

“That’s obvious.”

He glanced at Maya.

Then toward the passengers.

“I…”

For the first time, he seemed aware of the phones.

Three now.

Maybe four.

Sophie looked terrified for entirely different reasons.

Charles stepped backward.

“This has been misunderstood.”

Amara looked at the empty glass.

Then at her soaked daughter.

“Which part?”

“The water.”

“You poured it.”

“I was trying to—”

“Which part?”

Charles stopped.

Amara bent.

Picked up her handbag.

Examined the clasp.

A scratch crossed one corner.

Nothing major.

But the bag had been a gift from her late husband.

She closed her eyes for half a second.

Then looked at Charles.

He did not know that either.

He did not need to.

That was the point.

Charles lowered his voice.

“Can we speak privately?”

“No.”

“Ms. Carter.”

“No.”

Several passengers watched.

Amara sat again.

She wrapped Maya inside a white blanket from the diaper bag.

Sophie finally moved.

“I’ll get towels.”

Charles did not stop her.

That alone changed the cabin.

Sophie returned with two warm towels.

Amara accepted them.

“Thank you.”

Sophie’s eyes filled.

“I’m so sorry.”
