"Yes."

Reed turned toward me.

"Bennett. Why didn't you take the opening?"

"It wasn't real."

"How'd you know?"

"His body gave me the opening, but his eyes were waiting for me."

Reed nodded.

Then he looked at everyone.

"That's the lesson."

I expected him to say something about speed.

He didn't.

"The body isn't the only thing that reacts under pressure. Ego reacts. Fear reacts. Pride reacts. Embarrassment reacts. If you don't control those, your technique won't save you."

Nobody laughed.

Reed looked at me.

Then Cole.

"Again tomorrow."

I thought he meant another drill.

I was wrong.

The next day, there would be no crowd.

No easy reset.

No room for either of us to hide behind the idea that this was only about reflexes.

And when Cole stepped toward me one final time, I would finally understand what he'd been trying to teach me since the first punch.

Part 4: The Fight Inside The Fight

I woke up thinking about that first punch.

Not because I was afraid of it anymore.

Because I finally understood why I hadn't been.

That bothered me.

Fear is useful.

People talk about fear as though courage means removing it.

It doesn't.

Fear is information.

Something is dangerous.

Something matters.

Something can go wrong.

The problem comes when fear gets the final vote.

That first day, I hadn't had time to be afraid.

My body had answered before fear arrived.

But every exchange afterward had been different.

I'd had time to think.

Time to care.

Time to hear people cheering.

Time to want to prove something.

That was when I had become vulnerable.

Not when Cole surprised me.

When I started needing the room to believe in me.

That realization followed me into Training Room Four.

Cole was already there.

No crowd.

No Diaz.

No twenty soldiers waiting for entertainment.

Just Cole, Reed, and me.

The room felt larger when it was empty.

Reed stood near the wall.

"Close the door."

I did.

Cole looked at Reed.

"So what's the exercise?"

Reed answered with a question.

"Why'd you throw that first punch?"

Cole glanced at me.

We'd discussed it already.

"To test reaction."

"Wrong."

Cole frowned.

So did I.

Reed stepped onto the mat.

"You could test reaction a dozen ways."

Cole waited.

Reed continued.

"You chose Bennett. Why?"

Silence.

Cole's jaw tightened.

I looked at him.

For the first time since we'd begun training together, he looked uncomfortable.

Not physically.

Personally.

"Because she was fast," he said.

Reed waited.

Cole exhaled.

"Because everyone knew she was fast."

Something in my stomach tightened.

"And?" Reed asked.

Cole looked directly at me.

"Because I didn't know if it was real."

There it was.

The sentence I'd been hearing since I arrived.

She's good, but—

I crossed my arms.

"What wasn't real?"

"Your reactions."

"Why?"

"Because every drill was predictable."

"For everyone."

"Yes."

"But you tested me."

"Yes."

"Why me?"

Cole didn't answer immediately.

Reed didn't help him.

Finally Cole said, "Because you were getting praised for it."

I laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

"So this was ego."

"Partly."

"Partly?"

"I wanted to know."

"Whether I deserved it."

"Whether any of us deserved what we thought we knew."

That stopped me.

Cole looked toward Reed.

"I'd started noticing my own reactions getting lazy too. We all knew the patterns. Bennett was the fastest at them, but she knew them too."

He looked back at me.

"If you froze, the drill was bad."

"And if I didn't?"

"Then I was wrong."

I stared at him.

"About me."

"About the training."

I wanted to stay angry.

It would have been easier.

But the answer was too complicated for simple anger.

Cole had doubted me.

That was true.

He'd also doubted himself.

He had turned that doubt into a test.

An imperfect one.

A dangerous one if badly controlled.

But not a malicious one.

Reed looked at me.

"Why did you continue?"
