I left town for seven days, and when I came home, the two-story house I had spent four years restoring was gone—nothing left but bulldozer tracks, raw dirt, and my mailbox standing alone at the curb. The HOA president walked across the empty lot in spotless white shoes and calmly told me her crew had demolished the “wrong house,” then suggested I should be grateful because they had finally removed an eyesore from the neighborhood. She had no idea that before the first machine ever touched my walls, somebody had left behind a trail so precise that once I started following it, the missing house became only the beginning of her problem.
My name is Dean Holloway.
For most of my adult life, I have made a living figuring out why buildings fail.
I'm a structural damage investigator.
Insurance companies hire me after collapses.
Attorneys call when they need someone to determine whether a wall failed because of weather, bad design, bad construction, or somebody deciding to ignore a warning because fixing the problem would cost too much.
I spend my days around broken buildings.
That's probably why I fell in love with one everybody else wanted to demolish.
The house at 17 Ashcroft Lane was built in 1912.
When I bought it at foreclosure, the roof sagged, the porch leaned, and one corner of the foundation had settled enough to crack the plaster all the way through the dining room.
Most buyers looked at it and saw demolition costs.
I saw old-growth framing.
Hand-cut joints.
Original wavy glass.
A stone fireplace hidden beneath cheap paneling.
Bones worth saving.
For four years, I rebuilt it after work and on weekends.
I reinforced the foundation.
Repaired the roof.
Rebuilt the porch.
Tracked down old county drawings.
Found black walnut from a dismantled barn and used it to recreate the staircase.
