Karen frowned. “It's a pool.”

“No. It's a natural spring.”

“I've reviewed the community regulations.”

“Then you should have seen that the property already contained it when we purchased the house.”

Karen opened her folder.

“You are required to restore the property to compliance.”

“Which means?”

“Remove the structure. Drain the pool. Fill the depression.”

Mark stared at her.

“You want me to fill a natural spring?”

Karen's expression didn't change.

“I want you to comply with the HOA.”

Three days later, a formal violation notice arrived.

Then came a fine.

Then another.

Mark read every document twice.

Sarah watched him from across the kitchen.

“You're doing the Army thing again.”

“What Army thing?”

“Reading everything before deciding whether you're angry.”

Mark put the papers down.

“I'm not angry.”

“You're making that face.”

“What face?”
