CHAPTER 5 — THE HOA MEETING
The board called a special meeting. Patricia expected Marcus to apologize for challenging her. Instead, the board presented the police report, witness statements, and the association’s own rules.
The room became uncomfortable when members realized that the same language had appeared repeatedly in complaints involving people who simply looked out of place to the caller. Several residents shared their own experiences. A contractor described being stopped while carrying tools to a house. A teenager described being questioned while visiting a friend. Another homeowner admitted she had once been reported after returning from a trip in a rental car.
Marcus did not accuse every past caller of discrimination. He asked the board to distinguish genuine safety incidents from assumptions based on appearance.
