"Alcohol!" she grasped, pointing at a cooler .
"Adults legally drinking beer at a private residence isn't a crime, Delilah," I said flatly .
She looked around the crowd desperately, realizing her power was failing . It was almost sad to watch . Almost . "I'm shutting this down right now," she threatened .
"No."
Her eyes widened in absolute shock . "No?"
"No," I repeated firmly .
"You cannot refuse a direct HOA directive!"
"I can absolutely refuse an unlawful one," I said, my voice echoing slightly .
For a breathless second, nobody spoke . Then, in a fit of pure spite, Delilah reached into her blazer for her phone . "Fine," she spat . She dialed the numbers quickly . Miguel looked over at me, his face impassive . I looked back at him . Neither of us made a move to stop her; we simply let her dig her own grave .
Delilah spoke loudly into the receiver, making sure the entire crowd could hear her importance . "Yes, 911!"
"I need officers immediately!"
Miguel slowly stepped back away from the Mustang, crossing his arms . He didn't identify himself . He simply stood and listened to the unfolding disaster .
"There is an illegal commercial operation happening here," Delilah continued to the dispatcher . "I believe the property owner is conducting an unauthorized public event and illegally collecting money!" She paused, listening to a question . "Yes." Then she turned and glared directly at me . "And I believe there may be illegal alcohol distribution!"
Zoe tugged my shirt, whispering in horror, "She's totally making this up."
I placed a reassuring hand on my daughter's shoulder . "Let her talk, honey."
Delilah continued dramatically describing the scene to the emergency operator . Twenty cars . Dozens of rowdy people . Cash money being collected in a jar . An unauthorized mega-event . The dispatcher must have asked for more details because Delilah suddenly pointed her manicured finger straight toward my garage and Miguel . "Yes!"
"There is also a very suspicious man here who regularly arrives in an unmarked police-style vehicle!"
Miguel's calm expression finally changed . Just slightly . He looked down at the concrete . I could tell by the shaking of his shoulders that he was trying incredibly hard not to burst out laughing .
"I have personally documented this vehicle repeatedly!" Delilah boasted to the 911 operator .
At that point, Miguel finally spoke up . "Have you?"
Delilah whirled around . For the first time all evening, she looked directly at him . "Yes, I have."
He nodded slowly . "Did you ever bother to run the license plate?"
"That is none of your business!" she snapped haughtily .
"Probably not," Miguel agreed mildly .
"Who are you anyway?" she demanded .
He smiled a genuine smile . "Just a car enthusiast, ma'am."
She looked him up and down with utter disgust . Her elitist expression made it crystal clear what she thought of him . Faded jeans . Dirty boots . Plain T-shirt . Nothing impressive . Nothing important to her worldview . She turned away with a scoff . That was her final, devastating mistake .
