That was when Brenda arrived.

Her heels announced her approach before her voice did. She crossed the street carrying a folder and introduced herself to Dave as the HOA president.

"I hope you're taking this serious violation of our community standards appropriately," she said.

Dave shifted slightly.

"Ma'am, I've completed my inspection. There are no violations here."

"The installation is legal and properly permitted under agricultural exemptions."

Brenda's confident smile cracked. She started listing environmental dangers, safety hazards, and supposed evidence of commercial sales.

"No evidence of commercial activity and no environmental violations," Dave replied. "Safety standards exceed current requirements."

Then he added that repeatedly filing false complaints with city offices could itself carry penalties because it wasted municipal resources. He cited code 847.3 and explained that repeat false-report violations could carry fines reaching $5,000.

Brenda's face changed immediately. She insisted she had extensive documentation, but Dave told her he would review legitimate evidence if she had any and that nothing he had seen remotely matched the complaint filed with the city.

After Dave left, she remained in my driveway for nearly a minute. Then she looked at me.

"This isn't over, Marcus. There are other ways to handle problem residents who refuse to cooperate."

That evening, Jake, a contractor who lived three houses away, texted me screenshots from the neighborhood app. Brenda had created or was promoting a full-scale character assassination campaign.

Posts warned of dangerous fuel storage, declining property values, and residents who supposedly ignored community safety. Most neighbors defended me, but several appeared worried.

Then I noticed something important. Three of the loudest anti-Marcus accounts had been created within the past week, and their profile photos looked like generic stock images.

Someone was manufacturing neighborhood outrage through fake profiles. The discovery changed the situation for me because the campaign was no longer limited to violation letters or exaggerated complaints; someone was deliberately trying to manufacture consensus and poison the neighborhood against me.

I screenshotted everything, documented the accounts, preserved timestamps, and started building a file. Twenty years of military logistics had taught me to think several moves ahead and keep records.

I preserved screenshots, creation dates, profile images, comments, and every post that repeated Brenda's claims because desperate people tend to reveal more than they intend when they believe nobody is documenting them.

The next morning, I was drinking coffee when an unmarked sedan crept into my driveway. Two strangers got out, a woman in a wrinkled business suit and a man who looked like he was trying very hard to project authority.

They did not knock. They simply began photographing and measuring parts of my property.

I stepped onto the porch.

"Morning, folks. Something I can help you with?"

The woman glanced up from her tablet. "Property assessment, a routine neighborhood evaluation for insurance compliance purposes."

"Interesting," I said. "My insurance company didn't schedule any assessment, so could I see some official identification?"

The man stepped forward. "Sir, we have legitimate business conducting this evaluation, and I strongly suggest you return inside your residence."

That told me everything I needed to know. "I strongly suggest you remove yourselves from my private property before I call actual law enforcement."

They retreated, but not before the man took dozens of photographs of my fuel system.

Two hours later, my phone rang from an unknown number.

"Mr. Kellerman, this is Rick Santos from Apex Investigations. We need to discuss Brenda Ashworth immediately."

"I'm listening."

Rick told me Brenda had hired his firm to investigate me. She specifically requested anything illegal, embarrassing, or compromising and offered a $5,000 bonus for information that could result in my arrest or forced relocation.

Then came the detail Brenda had somehow failed to uncover herself.
