The video feed exploded in a burst of static, and then the screen on my phone went entirely black.

I stood in the quiet, carpeted hallway of the corporate office, staring at the black screen on my phone. The error message Camera 2: Connection Lost pulsed in stark white letters.

Panic, sharp and suffocating, seized my chest.

They were inside my sanctuary. They were actively destroying my property.

I didn't bother returning to the conference room to collect my laptop. I sprinted down the hallway, pushed through the heavy glass exit doors, and practically threw myself into my car in the parking garage.

The drive back to Oak Creek took forty agonizing minutes. My hands clamped around the steering wheel so tightly my knuckles ached. My mind spun through a dozen terrifying scenarios.

When I finally pulled onto my quiet street, I expected to see moving trucks or construction equipment. Instead, the neighborhood was completely still. The oppressive heat held everything in a heavy, silent grip.

I parked on the curb and ran across my front lawn. I rounded the corner of the house and skidded to a halt.

The heavy cedar side gate was wide open. The brass padlock had been cleanly severed, the cut metal pieces resting in the grass.

I stepped cautiously into the backyard, my heart hammering against my ribs.

The yard was empty. The water in the pool cascaded gently over the river rocks, indifferent to the intrusion.

I walked over to the corner of the house. The shattered remains of my expensive security camera dangled from its mounting bracket by a single black wire. The casing was completely destroyed.

I moved toward the back corner of the yard, where I had seen Richard kneeling on the video feed. The grass was trampled, and two neat, circular holes had been punched into the soil.

They had taken their core samples and fled.

But in their panic to escape after smashing the camera, Margaret had made a critical error.

Lying in the dirt, half-hidden under the broad leaves of my decorative hosta plant, was her heavy leather clipboard.

I snatched it off the ground. My hands were trembling as I flipped the metal clasp and opened the leather cover.

Inside was a thick stack of glossy architectural blueprints and legal documents printed on Vance Holdings letterhead.

I carried the clipboard to the patio table, sat down, and began reading.

The documents outlined a massive, multi-million dollar commercial project titled The Oak Creek Expansion. It included a luxury strip mall, a large fitness center, and a private medical clinic.

But there was a massive problem with their design.

I flipped to the master map. The proposed access road for the entire commercial complex was drawn directly over my property. The blue ink sliced straight through my house, right across the area where my pool now sat, connecting the main highway to the new development.

I pulled my folded property deed out of my back pocket and placed it next to their blueprints. I needed to understand how they thought they could just take my land.

I scanned the dense legal jargon on the second page of their proposal. My eyes locked onto a section highlighted in yellow marker.

Target Parcel 402 is currently protected by an original 1972 restrictive covenant preventing commercial development within 500 feet of the creek. However, municipal code 11.4 states that if the property is condemned for severe code violations, or if the homeowner is incarcerated and abandons the property, the covenant dissolves, and the land reverts to city auction.

The air in my lungs turned to ice.

Every bizarre clue suddenly slammed into place.
