Chapter 1 — The Pool Behind the Fence

The first sign that something was wrong was the sound of laughter.

It was not the occasional laughter of a neighbor enjoying an afternoon in their backyard. This was louder—dozens of voices carrying over the fence, accompanied by music, splashing water, and the unmistakable sound of people having a party.

I stood at my kitchen window and stared toward the backyard.

My backyard.

More specifically, my private swimming pool.

For several seconds, I simply watched in disbelief.

There were children running around the patio. Adults were gathered beneath umbrellas and around tables. Someone had brought a portable speaker. There were coolers lined up beside the pool, and at least a dozen people I had never seen before were walking around as if they owned the place.

I grabbed my phone.

Then I saw the message that had started it all.

A neighbor had posted in the community group:

"Pool is open for the neighborhood today! Everyone is welcome!"

My stomach dropped.

I immediately knew who had written it.

Karen.

She was the head of our HOA's social committee and, more importantly, the person who had spent the past year behaving as though every private property in the neighborhood belonged to the association.

But this time she had gone too far.

The pool wasn't an HOA facility.

It wasn't a community pool.

It wasn't shared property.

It belonged to me.

And apparently Karen had decided that didn't matter.

I walked outside.

As soon as I opened the gate, several people turned toward me.

Karen spotted me almost immediately.

She smiled.
