“No, Karen.”

She pointed toward the camera.

“The utility company did.”

Karen stared at the lens.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then police sirens sounded in the distance.

Karen turned.

A patrol car slowly entered Maple Ridge.

Her confident expression disappeared.

An officer stepped out.

“Karen Whitmore?”

Karen swallowed.

“Yes?”

“We need to ask you a few questions.”

“About what?”

The officer looked toward the utility box.

“Unauthorized access to telecommunications equipment.”

Karen opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

The technician glanced at the camera.

Then back at Karen.

“There’s something else you should know.”

Karen's eyes narrowed.

“What?”

“That camera has been recording this utility box continuously.”

Emily felt a chill run through her.

Karen did too.

The officer approached.

“How long have you been accessing this equipment?”

Karen shook her head.

“I haven't.”

The technician looked at her.

“Then the footage should clear you.”

Karen said nothing.

The officer gestured toward the camera.

“Let's see what it shows.”

Karen's face had gone completely white.

Because suddenly, the broken internet didn't seem like the biggest problem anymore.

The camera hadn't only recorded what happened that afternoon.

It had been recording for weeks.

And Karen had no idea what it had captured.

Chapter 2

By sunset, Maple Ridge had become the most chaotic neighborhood in the county.

The internet outage lasted nearly four hours.

For most residents, that was enough to turn an ordinary Thursday into a disaster.

Parents couldn't access school portals.

Employees couldn't connect to company servers.

A retired couple couldn't use their medical monitoring application.

One neighbor's smart garage door stopped responding.

Another family's security system went into offline mode.

But none of that compared with what was happening around Karen Whitmore.

The police officer had asked Karen to remain near the utility box while the technician repaired the damaged connection.

She refused at first.

“You have no right to detain me.”

The officer remained calm.

“You're not under arrest.”

“Then I'm leaving.”

“You're free to leave after we document what happened.”

Karen looked around.

Twenty neighbors were watching her.

Some were recording with their phones.

Others were whispering.

Emily stood near her porch, arms crossed.

For years, Karen had been the person everyone avoided.

Now she was standing in the center of the neighborhood with nowhere to hide.

The technician finished reconnecting the cable.

One by one, neighbors checked their phones.

“It's back!”

“My Wi-Fi is working!”

“Mine too!”

A cheer went through the street.

Karen looked irritated rather than relieved.

The officer turned toward the technician.

“Can we access the footage?”

“Yes.”

The technician opened a secure application on his tablet.

The small camera had recorded the utility cabinet from several angles.

He searched the footage from earlier that afternoon.

There was Karen.

Walking toward the box.

Opening it.

Looking around.

Pulling the cable.

The video was unmistakable.

Karen watched herself on the screen.

She looked furious.

“That doesn't prove anything.”

Emily stared at her.

“You're literally watching yourself pull the cable.”

Karen ignored her.

“I thought it was a private connection.”

The technician shook his head.

“You opened a locked telecommunications cabinet without authorization.”

Karen pointed at Emily.

“She had an illegal installation.”

“Her installation was approved.”

Karen stopped.

“What?”

The technician looked at Emily.

“Your service was approved last week.”

Emily nodded.

“I told Karen that.”

Karen's face tightened.

“You lied.”

Emily shook her head.

“No. You just didn't believe me.”

The officer took notes.

“Mrs. Whitmore, did you receive any authorization to access the equipment?”

Karen hesitated.

“I am on the HOA board.”

“That wasn't my question.”

Karen's voice rose.

“I've lived here for eighteen years!”

The officer remained calm.

“That doesn't give you permission to access utility equipment.”

Karen crossed her arms.

“You people are making this sound criminal.”

The technician glanced at the damaged cable.

“Because unauthorized interference with infrastructure can be serious.”

The crowd went silent.

Karen looked toward her SUV.

“I want to speak to my attorney.”

“That’s your choice.”

Karen turned and walked away.

But the damage was already done.

By the following morning, the video had spread throughout Maple Ridge.

Someone had posted a short clip to the neighborhood group.

Then someone else reposted it.

Then another person added a caption:

HOA PRESIDENT CUTS INTERNET TO PUNISH NEIGHBOR — DISCONNECTS ENTIRE STREET INSTEAD.

By breakfast, everyone knew.

By lunch, people outside the neighborhood knew.

And by evening, the local news station had called the HOA.

Karen was furious.

She demanded the video be removed.

Nobody listened.

The HOA board held an emergency meeting that night.

Karen arrived wearing a white blazer and carrying her handbook.

She sat at the head of the table.

“This meeting is unnecessary,” she announced.

One board member looked at her.

“You disconnected thirty homes.”

“It was an accident.”

“You accessed restricted equipment.”

“I was correcting a violation.”

“The internet company says there was no violation.”

Karen slammed her handbook onto the table.

“I am the president of this association!”

A silence fell over the room.

Then a board member named David spoke.

“That's exactly the problem.”

Karen stared at him.

“What did you say?”

“You think the title gives you authority over everything.”

Karen's expression hardened.

“You've been waiting years to challenge me.”

“No,” David replied. “We've been waiting years for someone to stop you.”

Karen stood.

“This is ridiculous.”

Another board member slid a document across the table.

“Thirty-two residents have signed a complaint.”

Karen looked down.

“What is this?”

“A request for an independent review of HOA leadership.”

Karen laughed.

“You're removing me because I pulled a cable?”

“No.”

David looked directly at her.

“We're reviewing you because this isn't the first time you've abused your position.”
