Chapter 6: The Salute

He wore worn jeans, a faded navy work shirt, and a plain gray baseball cap. Nothing about his appearance suggested decades of command in law enforcement; his retired badge remained locked safely inside.

A discreet camera recorded the driveway while another covered the street. Down the block, Detective Bramwell’s team monitored the live feeds and audio.

Sterling waited patiently.

At exactly 3:27 PM, Hadley marched up the driveway, flanked by Bryson. She clutched a document in her hand—the forged bill of sale—waving it like a weapon.

“Sterling!” she called out sharply. “My son owns this car.”

Sterling turned, looking at the fraudulent paper. He already knew every line on it, but kept his expression neutral. “I don't think so.”

Hadley smiled smugly. “Then we'll let the police decide.”

She pulled out her phone and dialed dispatch on the spot.

Sterling discreetly keyed the hidden microphone beneath his collar. “She’s making the call.”

“Understood,” Holt’s voice confirmed softly in his earpiece. The trap had closed.

Minutes later, two marked patrol cruisers pulled into the cul-de-sac. Hadley stood beside Bryson with a look of pure triumph, fully expecting the officers to order Sterling to hand over the keys.

Instead, Sergeant Brennan stepped out of the lead cruiser. The moment his eyes landed on Sterling, his entire posture snapped to attention. Officer Murchison followed his lead immediately.

Both officers raised their hands in a crisp, formal salute.

“Chief Halloran, sir.”

Hadley’s face went completely blank. Bryson’s jaw dropped open.

Sterling returned the salute smoothly. “Sergeant.”

Hadley darted her eyes between them in disbelief. “You... you know him?”

Brennan looked at her as if she were insane. “Of course we do.”

“He's the owner of the vehicle?” she stammered.

“I am,” Sterling stated evenly.

Desperate to regain control, Hadley thrust the paper toward Brennan. “My son purchased it legitimately! Here is the signed bill of sale!”

Sergeant Brennan took one look at the document in his hands.

“Where did this come from?” Brennan asked, inspecting the paper.

“It proves ownership,” Hadley declared defensively.

Sterling shook his head slowly. “It proves someone forged my signature.”

Hadley turned on him, her voice rising in anger. “You're abusing your position!”

Sterling remained completely unbothered. “That is precisely why I am not the one investigating this.”

Brennan looked over at him. “You already contacted Major Crimes?”

“Yes.”

Hadley’s face stiffened. “Major Crimes?”

An unmarked sedan rolled smoothly down the street and stopped alongside the cruisers. Detective Holt Bramwell stepped out and walked directly into the center of the group.

“Mrs. Lockwood,” Holt said evenly.

Hadley swallowed hard. “What is the meaning of this?”

Holt held out an open hand. “The bill of sale, please.”

She hesitated, gripping the paper tighter.

Bryson whispered anxiously, “Mom—”

“Be quiet!” Hadley snapped.

Holt waited patiently until she reluctantly handed over the document. He carefully slid the paper into an evidence sleeve.

“Who prepared this document?” Holt asked.

“My attorney.”

“Which attorney?”

She gave no answer.

Holt shifted his gaze to Bryson. “Did you sign this?”

Bryson glanced nervously at his mother. “My mom told me—”

“Don't say another word!” Hadley cut in fiercely.

Holt gave a slight nod. “That may be the first useful piece of advice you've given him all day.”

Distant sirens began wailing, growing louder by the second. Hadley’s remaining composure shattered entirely.

This was no longer about a 1968 Mustang—the entire enterprise was coming down.

Several Sheriff's Department vehicles turned into the cul-de-sac moments later. Two deputies headed straight for the Lockwood residence across the street, while a second team moved toward Whit Lockwood’s corporate office downtown.
