THE CRUSHED MUSTANG AT LOT EIGHTEEN
Chapter I: The Scrap Bin and the Pink Suit
The afternoon sun blazed over the manicured lawns of Desert Ridge Estates. Parked along the curb of Lot 18 was a heavy yellow tow truck with an industrial hydraulic crane, holding a massive metal scrap bin.
Inside the dumpster lay the crushed, crumpled wreckage of a vintage 1969 baby-blue muscle car. Its roof was caved in, glass shattered across the metal bed, and its engine block exposed to the dry desert air.
Standing triumphantly on the pavement was Evelyn Cross, the self-appointed president of the HOA. Dressed in a tailored pastel-pink pantsuit with gold chains glinting at her throat, she held a thick brown leather binder stamped HOA RULEBOOK against her ribs. She gestured toward the dumpster with an arrogant, beaming smile as neighbors across the street pulled out their phones to record.
"Problem solved," Evelyn declared proudly, tossing her blonde hair. "That junk's gone."
Walking down the driveway holding a paper coffee cup was Marcus.
Dressed in a simple gray crew-neck shirt, worn work jeans, and boots, Marcus stopped at the curb. His gaze shifted from the smug woman in pink to the crushed steel frame of his vintage car.
"You ordered this?" Marcus asked, his voice deceptively quiet.
