THE FIBER LINE AT LOT FORTY-FOUR

Chapter I: The Emerald Suit and the Open Box

The tranquil morning sun washed over the landscaped front yard of Lot 44 in the gated subdivision of Whispering Oaks. Mounted discreetly on the exterior brick column near the garage was a sleek, white 4K security camera aimed over the private driveway.

Marching onto the porch walkway, dressed in an emerald-green pantsuit and black stilettos, was Brenda Sterling. As the authoritarian president of the Whispering Oaks HOA, Brenda was notorious for patrolling the neighborhood with a rulebook, issuing daily fines for unapproved flowerpots and minor paint variations.

Standing in front of the open grey telecom distribution box mounted on the home's exterior wall, Brenda pointed a sharp, accusing finger at the exposed colored fiber-optic cables.

"No internet until that camera comes down!" Brenda snapped with smug entitlement.

Stepping out onto the walkway was Marcus, the homeowner. Dressed in a gold polo shirt and dark jeans, Marcus stood with his hands relaxed, his expression calm yet firm.

"You can't disconnect my service," Marcus warned in a measured tone.
