With a deafening crack, the old metal frame splintered, and the deadbolt tore free from the concrete. The door flew open, slamming against the interior wall.

I stumbled into the hidden room.

It was a windowless, soundproofed storage closet. In the center of the room, sitting on a rusted folding chair, was Lily, clutching her pink backpack to her chest, her face stained with tears.

Standing over her, holding a length of thick nylon rope, was Arthur Vance.

His pristine gray suit was immaculate. He looked completely out of place in the damp, rotting basement. When we broke through the door, he didn't jump. He didn't scream. He just slowly turned his head, his eyes locking onto mine with a look of absolute, chilling annoyance.

"Daddy!" Lily screamed, jumping out of the chair and sprinting toward me.

I dropped to my knees and caught her, wrapping my arms around her small body so tightly I thought I might crush her. "I've got you, bug. I've got you," I choked out, tears of absolute terror burning my eyes.

I pushed Lily gently behind me, standing up to face Vance.

But Silas was already moving.

The biker crossed the small room in two massive strides. Vance opened his mouth to speak, attempting to summon his authority, but he never got the chance. Silas's massive hands wrapped around Vance's throat, lifting the principal entirely off his feet and slamming him violently against the cinderblock wall.

The sound of Vance's skull hitting the concrete echoed loudly.

"Fifteen years," Silas growled, his voice trembling with a rage so profound it felt like a physical weight in the room. He pressed his forearm directly across Vance's windpipe. "Fifteen years I imagined what you looked like in the dark, Arthur. Fifteen years I searched for the monster. And you were handing out certificates at morning assembly."

Vance choked, his face turning a deep shade of crimson, his hands clawing uselessly at Silas's thick leather jacket.

"Silas," I said sharply, my hand resting on Lily's head to shield her from the violence. "Don't kill him in front of my daughter."

Silas didn't look at me. His eyes were locked on the man who had stolen his universe. "Why?" Silas demanded, easing the pressure just enough for Vance to breathe. "Why Maya?"

Vance gasped for air, a sickening smile slowly spreading across his bruised face. The mask was entirely gone. He wasn't hiding anymore.

"Because she was neglected," Vance rasped, his voice dripping with arrogance. "You were a drunk, Silas. You were a brawling, worthless biker. She came to school with dirty clothes and a bruised arm. I save them. I collect them before the world ruins them. I preserve their innocence. Just like I was going to preserve Lily from a father who can't even keep her safe in a locked school."

My blood ran ice cold. He truly believed he was a savior. He was completely, irrevocably insane.

"Where is she?" Silas whispered, a single tear cutting through the dirt and grease on his cheek. "Where is the rest of her?"

"You found what you found," Vance smiled maliciously. "The rest of her is mine. You'll never find the pieces."

Silas let out a roar of absolute agony. He pulled his fist back, ready to drive it through Vance's face and end the nightmare right then and there.

"Wait," I stepped forward. "Silas, wait."

Silas froze, his chest heaving, his fist trembling in the air.
