Chapter V: The Watch Returned
The rookie deputy inside the cruiser immediately surrendered the confiscated keys and records, stepping out with his hands raised in full cooperation.
Sheriff Miller retrieved the silver mechanical watch from Vance’s pocket, walked over to Frank, and handed it back with a sharp, respectful salute.
"General," the Sheriff said with deep reverence. "We apologize for the disgrace brought upon this uniform."
Frank took the silver watch, fastening it back around his wrist with quiet dignity.
"A badge is a shield to protect people, Sheriff," Frank said calmly, looking down at the disgraced deputy being handcuffed against the hood. "Not a license to steal."
Frank turned, climbed back into his Mustang, and fired up the thunderous V8 engine. As the black classic rolled smoothly onto Route 9, the rural highway was left under the true rule of justice.
