For a second, absolute silence gripped the room. Then, David, the interim CEO, quickly stepped away from the podium and bowed his head respectfully. The rest of the board members, recognizing the woman who had built their fortunes, immediately stood up from their leather chairs in unison.

I walked into the room. The only sound was the sharp click of my heels on the marble floor.

Harrison’s face went completely blank. He stared at me, his eyes darting from my tailored black suit to my pregnant silhouette, then to the armed security guards standing behind me. He blinked rapidly, his brain failing to process the impossible image in front of him.

"Nora?" Harrison whispered, the microphone on the table picking up his confused, breathless voice. "What... what are you doing here? How did you get past security? This is a closed board meeting!"

Chloe leaned forward, her face twisting in outrage. "Are you insane? Get out of here before he has you arrested!"

I didn't stop walking. I bypassed the empty chairs, gliding with absolute authority until I reached the head of the table.

I looked at David. "Thank you, David. I’ll take it from here."

"Of course, Madam Chairman," David said, stepping down from the main dais.

Harrison flinched as if he had been struck. The glass of water he was holding slipped from his fingers, shattering violently across the mahogany table. Water and ice spilled into his lap, but he didn't even move.

"Madam... Chairman?" Harrison choked out, the color completely draining from his face until he looked like a corpse. His eyes wildly scanned the room, looking at the board members who were still standing in respectful silence. "No. No, that's impossible. You're a graphic designer. You stay at home. You..."

"Sit down, Harrison," I said. My voice wasn't a yell. It was a command.

His knees gave out, and he collapsed back into his chair.

I took my position behind the podium and looked out at the room. "Please, be seated."

The board sat.

I opened the heavy leather folder I had carried in with me. I pulled out a stack of documents and tossed them casually onto the table directly in front of Harrison.

"Last night, my husband told me I was useless," I said, my voice echoing clearly across the vast room. I didn't break eye contact with him. "He told me I contributed nothing. That I was a freeloader. He kicked me and his unborn child out into a thunderstorm because he didn't want my lack of ambition to embarrass him in front of the mysterious Chairman of Vanguard Holdings."

A low murmur of shock rippled through the board members. Chloe shrank back in her chair, her face turning chalk white as she finally realized who she had been insulting on the porch.

"But I have been very busy," I continued, tapping the documents. "In fact, between 1:00 AM and 5:00 AM this morning, I audited the entire Midwest division."

Harrison began to visibly shake. Sweat beaded on his forehead. "Nora, please. We can talk about this at home. Please, you don't understand—"

"I understand everything," I cut him off, my voice turning to ice. "I understand that you authorized four million dollars in fraudulent vendor payouts to Apex Logistics. A shell company registered to your brother. I understand that Chloe Adams provided the secondary clearance, making her an accessory to federal wire fraud."
